A unusual experiment, conducted at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, in Batavia, Illinois, is attempting to find the answers to this and other mind-blowing questions regarding the universe we live in. Using a unique device called the Holometer, scientists have begun to collate data that is trying to detect the smallest unit in the universe.

Scientists now confirm that there is a high probability that the universe harbours an abundance of habitable planets.

NASA’s Kepler telescope has provided information to indicate that one in every five sun-like stars is orbited by planets comparable to Earth. In broad terms, this means that there could be billions of planets capable of supporting life in our Milky Way galaxy alone. The findings were published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and aired at a special news conference in California.

The field of quantum chromodynamics potentially offers this unsettling explanation for the fundamental construction of the Universe. Scientists have tested this theory with some success, though the degree of complexity involved means that only the world’s most powerful super-computers are up to the job. In doing so, however, they came to the realization that simulating physics at this level was essentially the same as simulating the Universe itself.
