I have always been concerned about what really happened on September 11, 2001, but I have also always thought that the attacks were the result of a combination of determined action on the part of terrorists and official incompetence. I did not really believe that they might have actually been orchestrated by our own government. Indeed, such a thought, in itself, seemed almost treasonous to me. I am a political moderate, but I am also a strong patriot. I don’t believe in condoning anti-government activity in time of war unless it is warranted by fact.

Last night I read a document that turned my blood to ice.

The document I am referring to was created by John Ashcroft last month and presently exists in draft form. It is called the Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003. It has thus far been given to only two members of congress that I know of, the Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, and Vice-President Cheney as President Pro-Tem of the Senate.

Osama bin Laden has always had a single objective. It is not to destroy the United States, but to gain political power. His objective, in directing his spectacular assault against the U.S., was to cause ferocious American reprisals that would outrage Moslem fundamentalists. He has as his objective the toppling of three governments: those of Pakistan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Since Unknowncountry.com began its coverage of 911 and I began reading my ‘What I Love About America’ statement on the radio, hundreds of people have voted with their feet, quitting my newsletter and abandoning the website.

It has been a hard, hard few weeks in our world, beginning with 911 and ending now with the latest FBI warning that Sunday could bring another terror attack. Anne and I have spent a great deal more time on Unknowncountry.com than ever before. The number of stories published by the site has quadrupled.
