Ever get the feeling you’re being spied on? (NOTE: subscribers can still listen to this show). The Air Force is working on a camera that can track you, no matter where you go. All they need to do is record a few seconds of footage of you, which you probably will not notice is being done, since they can do this from a great distance.
The camera captures a person’s unique facial muscle motions, and turns these movements into an accurate profile that means you can be spotted anywhere. The Photon-X company is developing a camera that, with one snap, can build a three-dimensional image of a person’s face, creating a distinctive "bio-signature" that can be used to track that person anywhere. In Wired.com, Noah Shachtman quotes uotes a spokesman for Photon-X as saying, "A brief list of potential industries (that could use the camera) includes law enforcement, banking, private corporations, schools and universities, casinos, theme parks, retail, and hospitality."
Shachtman quotes a spokesman for the Toyon Research Corporation, which got the same Air Force contract, as saying, "The proposed work will help identify non-cooperative dismounts using remote sensors, from standoff distances that were previously impossible. This identity information can help intelligence analysts connect specific people to events and locations, and learn about insurgent operations."
