We earlier reported that US milk is safe to drink, but new evidence shows this may not be true: The EPA reports that radiation from Japan has been detected in drinking water in several American cities, and cesium-137 has been found in American milk from Vermont for the first time since the Japan nuclear meltdown began.
On the Forbes Magazine website, Jeff McMahon reports that milk samples from Phoenix and Los Angeles contain iodine-131 at levels equal to the maximum contaminant level permitted by the EPA. Meanwhile, airborne contamination continues to blow cross the western states, and Boise, Idaho–a major part of the US farm belt–has one of the highest concentrations of radioactive isotopes in rainwater.
