Authors like Laurence Gardner and Michael Baigent have proposed the idea that a pregnant Mary Magdalene escaped into France. There are legends that say her progeny infused the blood of the royal families of Europe, but this may have been a story that was created as a bid for divine power.

When people pay money to get their family trees researched, they often find an extraordinary number of royals in the mix?perhaps because the person doing it doesn’t want to come up with a family tree made up of only ordinary people. But sometimes we really DO descend from kings and queens: Actress Brooke Shields has Catherine de Medici, Lucrezia Borgia, Charlemagne, Machiavelli, El Cid, William the Conquerer and 5 popes in her family tree.

It turns out this is nothing special: experts say that every single one of us is descended from at least one member of a royal family. In LiveScience.com, Matt Crenson quotes genealogist Mark Humphrys as saying, “Millions of people have provable descents from medieval monarchs. The number of people with unprovable descents must be massive.”

How can this be? It all comes down to math: anyone who had children more than a few hundred years ago has millions of descendants today, and the odds are that a few famous ones will be in the mix.
