It really could happen – According to a new model of the universe, there is a 50% chance that time will end within the next 3.7 billion years. The universe was created by the Big Bang around 13 billion years ago and has been expanding ever since, a there is evidence that this expansion is accelerating.

This means the universe will expand forever, meaning that it will become infinite and eternal, and that will also mean the end of time as we know it. It also means that, if the universe lasts forever, any event that can happen, will happen, no matter how unlikely. It could even happen an infinite number of times. Technology Review website quotes researcher Raphael Bousso as saying, “Time is unlikely to end in our lifetime, but there is a 50% chance that time will end within the next 3.7 billion years.”

The only way out of this is if some kind of catastrophe brings an end to the universe. But Bousso says that scientists don’t know what kind of catastrophe will cause the end of time but they do know we won’t see it coming–we’ll be well into it before we can observe its effects.

Time may end but most of our readers and listeners seem to blithely assume that Dreamland, along with this wonderful website, will NEVER end. But if you love what you find here when you fire up your computer every day, we have to deliver a subtle but REAL warning: Time is running out for us and we won’t be able to BE HERE much longer without more support. You can’t wait for someone else to do it, YOU need to subscribe today! Art credit: Dreamstime.com
