Could swine flu be the result of a lab accident? The evidence that it’s made up of viruses from both Mexican and European pigs points to this, because it’s illegal to export pigs from Europe to South America, and we know that scientists are working on creating a universal flu vaccine.

A claim by an Australian virus researcher that swine flu may have been created by human error is being investigated by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Australian researcher Adrian Gibbs says the virus could have been created in laboratories which grow viruses to make vaccines. Gibbs says he came to this conclusion while analyzing the virus’s genetic blueprint on the internet. ABC News Australia quotes Gibbs as saying, “There is the real possibility that it could be some sort of error in the laboratory.”

Or could it have been intentional? It sounds impossible, but it could be true: such things have been done in the past, including the deep past.
