The Japanese discovered how to make people invisible. Now some UK scientists have discovered how to make objects?especially military objects?invisible as well. And a new gown could protect you from getting a superbug, the next time you’re in the hospital.

The researchers have created a device that can reroute certain wavelengths of light, so that they are forced around objects they don?t want you to see. In, Ker Than quotes engineer David Smith as saying, “The microwaves come in and are swept around the cloak and reconstructed on the other side while avoiding the interior region, so it looks as if they just passed through free space.”

And this is just the start: cloaks that deflect radio waves could make an object like a military plane or ship invisible to radar.

We regularly report on how science is affecting what we wear. In another article in, Jeanna Bryner reports on a new hospital gown that shields against lethal superbugs?AND it covers your rear end.

This gown has a wrap-around design and an coating that controls the growth of superbugs such as drug resistant MRSA. In, Jeanna Bryner reports that “from 1999 to 2000, nearly 126,000 people in the United States were hospitalized with drug-resistant infections diagnosed as MRSA. The organism Staphylococcus aureus can dwell on a person?s skin without causing major problems there, allowing it to go unnoticed. If the superbug gets into your body, under the skin or into your lungs, it can cause lethal infections such as drug-resistant pneumonia.”

Fatima Ba-Alawi, who designed the gown, says, “I designed the gown to promote patient dignity, comfort and safety, but I’m delighted that it might help prevent the spread of diseases like MRSA.”
