Dr. Matthias Rath writes that the United Nation?s ?Codex Alimentarius Commission? wants to outlaw any preventive and therapeutic health statements made in relation to vitamins and other natural therapies worldwide. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is supporting this.

Rath feels this opposition is being led by multinational drug companies. The prevention and treatment of diseases using natural, over-the-counter vitamins and remedies threatens the huge prescription drug market.

The legislation will ban many common nutritional supplements and drastically reduce the dosage of other legal vitamins that are sold in Europe. A number of vitamins, minerals and herbs will require prescriptions from physicians. The regulations will override current laws in individual European countries that allow the sale of most supplements. While this legislation will not affect the U.S., it?s only a matter of time before such regulations are passed here.

The drug industry, which is a major manufacturer of vitamins, has a history of manipulating the trade in dietary supplements. Last year, the European Commission fined Roche, BASF and eleven other large pharmaceutical companies, a total of 855 million euros for secret vitamin price fixing. This was the biggest fine the European Commission had ever imposed. Roche, BASF and Aventis were also fined a record $26 million in U.S. federal court after being convicted of a worldwide price fixing conspiracy. The pharmaceutical cartel manipulated prices on vitamins A, B1, B2, B5, B6, C, D3, E and beta carotene from 1990 to 1998 and cheated consumers out of billions of dollars.
