Residents in the Cuban town of Rodas have reported a meteor strike that made an enormous noise as it hit. It is possible there is a debris field in Earth’s gravity well, possibly following the asteroid that just passed the planet. If so, more strikes are possible, and there is no way to detect them prior to entry into the atmosphere, or to stop them.
At present it does not appear that the Cuban strike caused any damage to populated areas. Marcos Rodriguez, an area resident identified by Cuban television as an expert, reported that "everything seems to indicate that it was a fireball, which is a fragment of stone and metal that enters the Earth’s atmosphere at high speed." Fireballs are a common form of meteor, but objects that are visible in daylight and cause substantial noise are less so. This object was probably somewhat smaller than the meteor that struck in Russia earlier, but significantly larger than normal.
