As if astronauts planning trips to the moon and Mars didn’t have enough to worry about, they now have something else: heart attacks. Exposure to cosmic radiation outside the Earth’s magnetic field could be detrimental to their arteries (NOTE: Subscribers can still listen to this show).
Using an animal model, researchers assessed the affect of iron ion radiation commonly found in outer space to see if exposures promoted the development of atherosclerosis, as terrestrial sources of radiation are known to do. They observed that cosmic radiation accelerated the development of atherosclerosis, independent of the cholesterol levels or circulating white blood cells of the mice. So even if our astronauts have their cholesterol under control, they could still be affected.
Pathologist Dennis Kucik says, "It’s well known that prolonged exposure to radiation sources here on Earth, including those used in cancer treatment, excessive occupational exposure and atomic bombs, are associated with an increased risk for atherosclerosis. But cosmic radiation is very different from X-rays and other radiation found on Earth. The radiation risks of deep-space travel are difficult to predict, largely because so few people have been exposed."
And while X-rays can be blocked by lead shields, cosmic radiation ions can become MORE dangerous when they interact with metals. The only people who have been exposed to high levels of cosmic radiation are the 24 astronauts who have been to the moon as part of NASA’s Apollo missions in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and scientists can’t draw any conclusions from studying such a small number of people. 1998, a mysterious little man that Whitley Strieber calls the Master of the Key burst into his hotel room in Toronto and told him all kinds of things he didn’t know–but when he checked them out later, he found out they were TRUE. (The new, UNCENSORED edition of The Key, with a foreword that talks about how many of his statements later turned out to be true, is in bookstores NOW). One of the few things that Whitley could NOT check out was MOTKE’s provocative statement that we are stuck on this planet because the parents of the child who would have given us the ability to travel into space was killed in the holocaust! When it comes to UFOs and "Visitors," we feel that we CAN draw conclusions because Anne Strieber has read a quarter of a million letters from "contactees," and has posted fascinating interviews with eleven of them, like "Steve."
