We’ve updated you on the AIDS virus and the bird flu virus and both are frightening. But scientists are actually finding GOOD ways to use bacteria and viruses?in toothpaste and cold cuts!

LiveScience.com reports that chewing gum, toothpaste and deodorant might soon contain beneficial bacteria to fight tooth decay and odor. Researchers know which bacteria cause tooth decay, by sticking to the surface of teeth and producing an acid that breaks down tooth enamel.

It turns out that the bacteria in yogurt can fight this bacteria, causing it to clump together so that it can?t become attached to the tooth surface. Chewing gum containing this good bacteria reduces the number of these harmful bacterium in the mouth by 50 times. This same bacteria, when used in deodorants, reduces the odor-causing bacteria that grows in the sweat in your underarms and on your feet. Toothpaste and mouthwash containing the good bacteria from yogurt should be available from the German company BASF in 2007.

Viruses can be good too. When a mixture of bacteria-killing viruses is sprayed on cold cuts and hot dogs, it kills the Listeria bacteria that causes most cases of food poisoning, and has even caused some deaths in children, pregnant women, the elderly and immune deficient people.
