The US has been the object of criticism worldwide for using depleted uranium in its bullets. The radioactive dust from these bullets causes cancer and persists in the environment for years. Now that global warming is causing more and more air from the Middle East to blow into Europe, European scientists are discovering a sudden and frightening increase in radioactivity levels. And a US company is monitoring them–and fighting release of data.

Leuren Moret writes on the American Free Press website that British scientists Chris Busby and Saoirse Morgan think that the use of uranium weapons in Iraq has led to radioactive contamination in Europe.

During the Cold War in the 1950s, the UK started monitoring air levels for radioactivity. They were also concerned about radiation coming from their own nuclear power plants and weapons facilities. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion in 1986 showed how important this was. Now these same monitors have detected high levels of depleted uranium (DU) in the atmosphere in the UK. Since prevailing winds blow the same material all around the world, we doubtless have DU in our own air, as well. DU contamination has been shown to lead to an increase in cancer and, especially, birth defects.

Three years ago, shortly before we invaded Iraq, the UK radiation detection facilities in Aldermaston were taken over by Halliburton, despite the fact that it is a US company. Halliburton at first refused to release some of its data to Busby. He was finally able to get the data from Halliburton by filing a freedom of information request. The British Freedom of Information Act became law in January of 2005 (The US FOIA was amended in 1996, to give private citizens access to declassified government secrets). However, when Busby got the data, key information from 2003 was missing, which he was finally able to procure from the defense department in the UK.
