Foods that give some people a headache range from cheese to pickles (in other words, FERMENTED foods). Many of them contain tyramine, a natural food chemical that transmits signals along pain nerve endings.
10 to 15% of us–mostly women–regularly get migraine headaches, while 15% of us regularly get common, more easily treated, ones. When 50% of migraine sufferers change their diets in order to avoid certain foods (such as switching from red to white wine), they get some relief.
In the December 18th edition of the Wall Street Journal, Sumathi Reddy reports that some of these foods are: aged, dried, and fermented meat and fish, such as pepperoni and salami
Aged cheeses, such as blue, Brie, Cheddar and provolone
Fermented soy products, like miso, soy sauce and teriyaki sauce
Beans, sauerkraut, pickles and olives
Foods containing as ingredients monosodium glutamate, nitrites and sulfites (inexpensive, blended red wines contain sulfites, which is why headache sufferers can sometimes only drink the expensive stuff)
