Pierre Thomas writes for abcnews.com that starting in June, the government will begin a wide-ranging program of polygraph testing to determine if one of its own employees is responsible for last year’s anthrax attacks. 200 current and former employees at Fort Detrick in Maryland, the Dugway Proving Ground in Utah and a number of other labs across the country will take voluntary polygraph tests in the hope that one of them might produce a lead. Those questioned will include people who have expertise in the production of anthrax or have had access to it.

Scientific analysis of the anthrax sent in letters that killed five people is consistent with the Ames anthrax strain housed by the U.S. military at Fort Detrick and distributed to a number of labs for research, meaning that the terrorist is probably a scientist employed by the U.S. government.

Earlier this year, the FBI sent a letter to the 43,000 members of the American Society of Microbiology, which said, “It is very likely that one or more of you know this individual ? Based on his or her selection of the Ames strain ? one would expect that this individual ? had legitimate access” to biological agents.

When the polygraph results are in and the media announces it has discovered the identity of the anthrax terrorist, we should remember that when Whitley Strieber passed 3 polygraph tests about his Communion experiences in 1987, the media announced that polygraph results were not to be trusted. Members of Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda terror network have met with militant Palestinian groups Hamas and Hezbollah, and a number of other militant Middle Eastern groups in late March to discuss joining forces in a war against the West.

FBI Director Robert Mueller says he expects suicide bombings like those seen in Israel would eventually take place in the United States. “I think we will see that in the future; I think it’s inevitable,” he says. “I wish I could be more optimistic.”

In such attacks, a terrorist walks into a crowded public area and detonates explosives strapped to his body ? killing himself, and possibly innocent bystanders. The tactic is used by Hamas and Hezbollah on Israeli targets.

At the Lebanon meeting, the groups discussed tactics and the possibility of an unprecedented level of joint activity, including a possible new round of attacks against America, Great Britain, and other targets. The secret summit marked the first time bin Laden’s group put aside its rivalries to work with others terrorist organizations. U.S. officials also warn that other Islamic extremist groups, such as Egypt’s Islamic Jihad, could be planning attacks in the United States. So far, neither Hezbollah nor any of the Islamic militant groups linked with the Palestinian struggle have been linked directly to terrorist activities on U.S. soil.

“It suggests a new departure which is very startling and dangerous because they have not worked together before,” says Vince Cannistraro, a former CIA counterterrorism chief.

“They definitely have the will, they’ve shown that,” said Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Gregory Newbold.

U.S. officials believe a pattern of apartment building bombings, such as the ones in Russia in 1999, which authorities say were linked to Chechen rebels, could happen here in the United States. Apartment buildings in Moscow and the southern Russian town of Volgodonsk were rigged with explosives, disguised as deliveries of sugar, and detonated simultaneously with truck bombings outside the buildings. More than 200 people died in the attacks.

The threats led the FBI to issue a warning last week that terrorists may simply rent an apartment in a skyscraper and pack it with explosives to bring down the building. Some building managers responded by posting warnings in the lobby and informing tenants.

These new threats make us wonder what the ultimate goal of Islamic terrorism really is. If they begin killing innocent civilians in the U.S. the same way they?ve been killing them in Israel, with bombers walking into weddings and pizza parlors, they will lose all the recent sympathy here that has been building for the Palestinian cause. After all, in the U.S., we do not have Palestinian refugee camps and we have not bulldozed any Palestinian buildings so there can be no justification for this kind of attack (if direct attacks on civilians can ever be ?justified?). Do they really want a Palestinian state?or do they desire the end of the West? Such a goal may seem impossible and ridiculous, but Hitler had similar goals which may have been equally impossible, but many had to suffer and die in order to stop him.
