On this week’s Dreamland, we interview world famous Egyptologist John Anthony West, so it’s appropriate that a new Egyptian tomb has just been discovered?containing the graves of three royal dentists!
Reporter Sierra Millman writes that the tomb was discovered thanks to the arrest of three grave robbers. Archeologists says the tomb was protected from discovery for thousands of years by a curse, saying that anyone who violated the graves would be eaten by a crocodile and a snake.
Zahi Hawass, chief of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, says that hieroglyphs depicting an eye over a tusk identify the tomb as belonging to dentists. On one wall is an inscription telling about the curse. The tomb is near the Step Pyramid of King Djoser, which is believed to be Egypt’s oldest pyramid. The Step Pyramid was built about a century before the famous pyramids of Giza.
Despite that fact that royal dentists were in demand, they were not very wealthy, so the tomb was made out of modest mud-brick and limestone, rather than the pure limestone favored by the pharaohs.
