We’ve told you about the latest on autism, AIDS and bird flu?now we present the latest news on Alzheimer’s, the frightening disease that makes time meaningless.

Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center have successfully restored normal memory and brain functioning to mice suffering from Alzheimer?s disease. They have identified an enzyme that is required for normal brain function but that is impaired in mice that are bred to develop Alzheimer’s. When the enzyme?s function is elevated, the mice regain the ability to form new memories.

In a large study, other researchers found that people who drank three or more servings of fruit and vegetable juices per week had a 76% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those who drank juice less often. This group is investigating Alzheimer’s by studying older Japanese populations living in Japan, Hawaii and Seattle. The researchers chose to study this group because of the low incidence rate of Alzheimer’s disease in the Japanese population. However, the incidence of Alzheimer’s in Japanese people living in the United States is higher, approaching the incidence rates in Americans. This points to environmental factors like diet and lifestyle as important contributors to disease risk.
