Al-Qaeda has bought at least 15 ships in the last two years, creating the first terrorist navy since pirates roamed the Caribbean. Lloyds of London has helped Britain’s MI6 and the CIA trace the sales, which were made through a Greek shipping agent suspected of having personal contact with bin-Laden. Right now, the fleet is thought to be in the Indian or Pacific ocean, heading for somewhere in Asia.
Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin reports that the ships are registered in Yemen and Somalia and are capable of carrying cargoes of chemical weapons or even a “dirty bomb” or nuclear bomb. They could deliberately crash into a cruise ship, an oil rig or a civilian port in a suicide mission. The State Department says, “We are seeing increasing indications that al-Qaeda is preparing to strike U.S. interests abroad.”
In October 2000, the USS Cole was hit by an al-Qaeda suicide crew, and seventeen American soldiers died. In 2002, a similar attack was carried out against a French supertanker off the coast of Yemen.
