While the sheer amount of information that can be stored in genetic code is well known — a single gram of DNA is estimated to be able to hold 700 terabytes of information — it turns out that there is yet another layer of information that is mechanically encoded into our genetic material. A new study has found this extra layer of encoded information in our DNA, in that the way the molecule itself is folded acts as yet another layer of information that can be used by the host organism’s cells. As it is, each cell holds strands of DNA that are approximately six feet long, so each strand needs to be folded extremely tightly to fit into the cell’s microscopic nucleus.

In recent years, numerous scientists and experts in the field of artificial intelligence have warned about the likelihood of AI surpassing human intelligence, and how that development may impact our society. Entrepreneur and technological boundary-pusher Elon Musk has also voiced the same concerns, musing that if AI becomes intelligent enough, it may come to think of humans as nothing more than quaint pets. 50 people were killed and 53 injured in a ferocious attack at a the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida on the night of June 11. According to police, the attack was carried out by Omar Saddiqui Mateen of Fort Pierce, a small city southeast of Orlando. No motive has as yet been determined, and no terror group has claimed responsibility. Mateen was killed by police at the scene.
