Today, we acknowledge the passing of a light and, in a way, the passing of a torch.

Hanny el-Zeini, who wrote in collaboration with his friend, Om Sety, died in November, 2013. Their 1983 book, Abydos: Holy City of Ancient Egypt remains the ultimate guide book to this extraordinary temple.

The quest to find those who have come back from the future all started over a poker game.

Astrophysicist Robert Nemiroff and his students were playing cards (for chips) last summer, chatting about Facebook. They wondered: If there were time travelers among us, would they be on social media? How would you find them? Could you Google them?

“We had a whimsical little discussion about this,” said Nemiroff, a professor at Michigan Technological University. The result was a serious-but-fun effort to tease out travelers from the future by sifting through the Internet. Unfortunately, they have uncovered no DeLorean time machines, but that hasn’t made the search less interesting.

The term "global warming" suggests that we can expect temperatures across the planet to become increasingly hotter with every passing year.

Australia’s blazing hot weather certainly broke all records during 2013, with summer and winter temperatures that were 1.2C above the long term average. In its annual report, the Bureau of Meteorology announced that last year was the hottest since records began in 1910. The report revealed that temperatures had remained consistently above average for most of the last ten years, and that this trend appeared to be in line with an increase in temperatures worldwide due to global warming:
