We had a full moon just a few nights ago. In the Florida Keys, the August full moon is the setting for an incredible secret event: the annual spawning for the elkhorn, staghorn, boulder star coral, which are some of the most threatened corals in the world.

“We’ve been at this for quite a while, and each year we learn a little bit more about these corals,” says biologist Margaret Miller. “Unfortunately, we only have one opportunity a year to observe these corals spawning.” Researchers have learned to predict the narrow time frame during which these corals will be spawning, which is during the late evening hours over the week or so after the full moon in August.

The expression, “Don’t blink or you?ll miss it,” has taken on a new meaning. Researchers have found that parts of the brain actually shut down every time we blink. The average person blinks about 15 times per minute. So even though the mini-blackouts are instantaneous, they add up to about nine days per year when our brain is shut down?or one or two years in an average life span.

Can we continue to burn fossil fuels and still halt global warming? Big government and big business are pushing zero emission power plants tha tburn coal or gas but release no CO2. Europe is much more worried about global warming than the complacent US, because if the gulf stream stops flowing, which it happening right now, then the UK and much of Europe will have the climate of northern Canada.

When you take your annual Labor Day trip to the beach, will it be safe to go in the water? Ocean and lakefront beaches across the United States reported 20,000 closings in 2004 due to hazardous water conditions. This the highest number since the Natural Resources Defense Council started keeping track 15 years ago. The NRDC’s Nancy Stoner says, “Instead of closing our beaches, let’s clean up the water.”
