Fear of flying may be the main cause of the potentially fatal condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which affects up to 30,000 long distance travelers a year. Until now, it was believed that DVT, often called ?economy class syndrome,? was caused by the cramped conditions on planes, along with long periods of immobility which could cause clots to form in the veins of passengers? legs.

The British Big Cat Society says sightings of strange cats in the countryside are on the increase. There were 438 sightings reported last year. Scotland had the most, with 85 sightings of big cats, followed by Wales with 72. The group says there have been so many reports that there may be a hybrid species roaming Britain.

Danny Bamping, co-founder of the BBCS, says, ?It?s been an incredible year for big cat sightings, especially when you consider that foot and mouth was rife all over the country in the first few months of 2001.? The society has received reports from 31 counties in Britain of attacks by big cats, including one on a horse. Six people reported a Puma sunbathing for several hours.

There is a serious risk that the river Seine will burst its banks in Paris and surrounding areas sometime this winter. Areas of central Paris on both sides of the river could be submerged. The last time this happened was during the great flood of 1910.

Italian police have arrested six people for trafficking in defective Airbus spare parts that are suspected of causing the November 12 American Airlines crash in Queens, New York, in which 265 people died.

Officers of the Italian Finance Police, working in conjunction with the FBI, checked over six aging Airbus A300s that were parked in a hangar at Leonardo da Vinci airport in Rome. Officers said the planes had been dismantled for spare parts by an Italian company, Panaviation, to sell to American, Canadian and other airlines, using false documentation claiming they were airworthy. Police have seized three container loads of aircraft spare parts in Naples that Panaviation was shipping to the United States for sale.
