According to a new study of the 1959-1961 Great Leap Forward famine in China, women are more likely to give birth to girls during famine conditions than when there's plenty to eat. With the recession on here in the US, we may start to see more girls born here as well.

In LiveScience.com, Stephanie Pappas quotes sociologist Shige Song as saying, "Investment on male children is a high-risk, high-return game, so you want to do it only if you are in very good situation." This may be part of the reason for the high rates of infanticide of girls in recent years, due to China's one-child ruling.

Hormones that mimic estrogen are turning up in many of the plastic items we use, and estrogenic herbicides are feminizing male animals and fish. Some male frogs now have female organs, and some male fish even produce eggs. In a Florida lake contaminated by these chemicals, male alligators have tiny penises. Let's hope this doesn't happen to us humans!

The problems that are associated with humans who are exposed to these chemicals include breast cancer, infertility, low sperm counts, genital deformities, early menstruation and even diabetes and obesity.

More Trash in the Ocean Than We Thought

There are more than just cracks in the ocean floor: While working on a research sailboat gliding over glassy seas in the Pacific Ocean, oceanographer Giora Proskurowski noticed something new: The water was littered with confetti-size pieces of plastic debris, until the moment the wind picked up and most of the particles disappeared. In other words, the ocean is a gigantic, deep trash can.

Object over Fresno with nonstandard lights

This object was taped last night over Fresno, California. It could be a plane, but the running lights are not in an FAA approved configuration, or don't appear to be. We got a rash of UFO reports from California in the past few days, including one from Whitley Strieber. So far, this is the only footage that has appeared.

Smoking is not sexy: Exposure to second hand smoke is bad for a fetus and it's bad for teenagers too: Researchers report that exposure to tobacco smoke nearly doubles the risk of hearing loss among adolescents (Come to think of it, Whitley's parents were heavy smokers!)
