I'm stumped, just like the author of this article. Are these solar arrays, some sort of agricultural system, or what? If you have certain knowledge of what they are, post a comment below. Or just an idea--post away!

The article goes on to identify the structures as satellite calibration tools, but probably also used for certain aircraft and drones. After having a good look at them (and I'm no expert on the matter), I'd tend to agree.

Yes, they are for calibration purpose for aerial/satellite photography.

These things have been used at least since the 1930s, when the U. S. Department of Agriculture and the U. S. Geological Survey started major aerial photography programs for the purpose of mapping.
