A video of a supposed "Mars Base" found on Google Mars has been burning up the blogosphere. Unfortunately, it is not an image at all, but a digital imaging dropout caused by long distance transmission. Image files contain a certain amount of redundant data that's used for error correction. When the data stream loses its integrity, the error-correction algorithms retrieve this redundant data and attempt to reconstruct each block. If there's not enough extra data to provide a complete reconstruction, what will result is a partial or "confused" reconstruction. That's what you're seeing in those blocks that are both lighter and darker than the surrounding areas. (The lightest areas represent a complete absence of useful data.)

In trying to interpret these kinds of images we have to distinguish between what our eyes are actually seeing and what our minds may project.  When you're trained in photography one of the many things you notice (that most people don't notice consciously) is the behavior of light. Light from a single source (in this case, the Sun) throws shadows in only one direction -- but in this case the lighter blocks are surrounded by darker blocks in all directions, so they can't be shadows cast by a three-dimensional object.

OpenMinds does an outstanding job in general. This article is well done. More people should use night vision equipment to video the night sky. It may be that a great deal of previously unnoticed activity will be revealed. Unless these objects are spy craft that are not using FAA approved running lights, they are not only mysterious, their numbers suggest that whoever is here is really out in force. However, be aware that, as the article points out, birds can present a mysterious appearance to an infrared camera. They are relatively easy to distinguish, however, as long as the videographer has a good idea of what they look like using night vision equipment. A video of birds in flight is provided for comparison.

This extremely fast object is not a nearby bird or insect. Clearly not a plane and no signs of a computer-generated effect. Graded B.

These images were shot by an Unknowncountry.com reader on a flight home from Orlando. The unusual images start 1:57 into the video.

This is one of the most extraordinary crop formations ever to appear. It's easy to dismiss as a hoax, much harder to determine how the hoaxers might have gone about creating it. In any case, it is beautiful, awe-inspring and very, very strange.

These massive fleets of unknown objects have been appearing worldwide since first being seen in Mexico in the early 1990s. They seem to function in tandem, like schools of fish. Are they some sort of natural phenomenon? An undiscovered aerial life form? They are very strange.

This is a genuine video, and there is no common form of aircraft that displays lights like this. So this is a real unknown. Graded A.

Looks pretty convincing, but of course it could simply be a friend or a prankster in a gorilla costume. Graded B.

This part of Wiltshire is among the most magically powerful places on earth.

Lights rising out of the ground have been associated with earthquakes, but also with UFO and close encounter activity.

This is an outstanding photo of an unknown object in the sky. It appears to be moving very quickly, and the visible shape makes it unlikely that this is an insect or bird close to the camera. Graded B.

Comet Elenin hysteria is a dangerous sickness. All of the conspiracy theories are wrong. It is an ordinary comet, period. The real astronomy done on the comet is clear: it is an ordinary, garden variety comet. Hysteria over Comet Hale-Bopp led people to take their own lives in an insane suicide pact. That must not be allowed to happen again.

Ed Grimsley is the real deal. He has been the subject of a quiet investigation by Unknowncountry staff, and his videos are authentic. They are made using an infrared camera, and show a great deal of unexplainable activity in the night sky. Graded A.

When Dreamland ran its 3 week crop circle exploration, the question was asked: when will it end? Apparently not just now.

EVP phenomena are always curious. They're easy to explain away, but should they be?

This is a real video. The objects are not functioning like balloons. So they're unidentified. Graded B.

The group Anonymous is about to hoax the world with a blizzard of reports of triangular UFOs. They hope to create another 'war of the worlds' frenzy, so be warned, don't buy into it. It is scheduled to start at 8PM EDT on May 22. We probably see twenty prank UFO videos to every on that might be real. Life is shorter than these jerks think. Why waste what time you have?

Pretty good orb video. Hard to see except in the closeup. Could be something ordinary, but it's a pretty discreet object and doesn't move as if it's being blown by a breeze.

These could be space debris or, in one or two cases, satellites, but they also may be genuine unknowns.

This is impossible. There must have been extraordinary electrostatic energy in the air. But where did it come from? How was it transmitted? This is VERY strange.

This is really a very bizarre event. It takes a lot of energy to move that much dirt, but what did it? Strange signs are all around us these days. Be aware.
