Michael McCarthy writes in The Indpendent that a small group of UK government officials are trying to combat global warming by "turning established principles of economic life upside down." It is so important that this be done that "it will have to be taken out of politics," something that hasn't even begun to happen here.
These "four senior MPs" (the equivalent of our congressmen) say that the official policy for fighting climate change has failed. They want the government to abandon its "business as usual" policy of focusing on economic growth, and concentrate instead on limiting greenhouse gas emissions.
Will any US politicians have the courage to make a statement like this? An added note: The Independent has named McCarthy Environmental Journalist Of The Year. The tragedy is that there is not a single contender for this title in the US media.
