The physics website physorg.com reports that researchers have developed a tabletop fusion accelerator that produces nuclear fusion at room temperature, which could eventually lead to a portable, battery-operated generator. The possibility of fusion energy, which has been debated for years, is finally becoming a reality.
The researchers, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, say that fusion has "considerable commercial potential," meaning that it will be running our power plants soon, with far less pollution than conventional fuels and far less danger than the current type of nuclear (fission) power. But in order to use fusion efficiently, we need Helium 3 fuel, and there's only one place to get it: the moon. When you suddenly read stories about NASA returning to the moon, remember this fact.
Will we eventually shovel up so much Helium 3 from the moon's surface that we will change the face of the moon that we all see: The Man in the Moon to Westerners and The Rabbit in the Moon to Asians? Not if we confine our digging to the DARK side of the moon, which is never seen from Earth.
