United Airlines and the New York Stock Exchange have both announced that they have shut down operations due to computer problems. United shut down on Tuesday, and the FAA said at 9 a.m. yesterday that an automation problem had been resolved and that it had given the airline permission to begin flying again. Delays are continuing as the airline works to reconstruct its schedules.

A few moments ago, the New York Stock Exchange halted trading due to a computer malfunction that has not yet been explained. We do not yet know if these two issues are related, but two such unusual problems coming so close together do suggest the possibility of cyberattack. The Department of Homeland Security has initially stated that there appear to be no signs of malicious activity in the NYSE and United problems. Unknowncountry will continue to follow this story.
