War Games
02-Sep-2009

The military often uses special "games" to play out scenarios about whether or not it would be wise to undertake a certain military exercise (but do they pay attention to the results? That's another topic!) It turns out that this is one of the things that has been done with regard to whether or not Iran will use its nuclear capacity to build a nuclear bomb.

If it's HOT Where You Are
01-Sep-2009

Here's why - What's going on with the weather? More extremely hot summer days are projected for every part of the country. While the data show indisputable warming over the past several decades, cooler-than-average temperatures across the Midwest and Northeast this summer 2009 make it is easy to lose sight of this long-term trend. According to the most recent science on heat waves, this respite is temporary. Think there's no such thing as climate change? We're afraid that's just a dream. And alas, it's time to wake up.

Fake Trees are Fine
31-Aug-2009

For some things - Living trees are a vital part of the earth but fake ones can be important too. Engineers want to plant a forest of 100,000 "artificial trees" within the next 10 to 20 years to help soak up the world's greenhouse gases by capturing the CO2 from the air through a filter. The greenhouse gas would then be removed from the filter and stored.

Why Don't We Act on Global Warming?
27-Aug-2009

While most Americans think climate change is an important issue, they don't see it as an immediate threat (even though it's affecting people's lives RIGHT NOW in many places) so getting people to "go green" requires policymakers, scientists and marketers to look at our psychological barriers to change. What will lead people to take the action that is needed?

Do We Read Each Other Right?
26-Aug-2009

Speaking different languages is hard enough, but interpreting facial expressions differently only adds to the confusion when people from different places try to communicate! When Asians migrate to US and open small businesses, there is sometimes a lot of misunderstanding, because smiling at strangers is considered rude in many Asian countries, while Americans can be put off by what they perceive as coldness. This is just another example of the fact that different cultures read facial expressions differently.

Life on Venus
04-Aug-2009

Astronomers observed a huge scar on Jupiter on July 20, thought to be caused by a comet or asteroid impact. Now a similar scar has appeared on Venus. Because Venus is an inner planet, it is less likely that this scar was caused by an incoming object. However, if it is volcanic in origin, it would have been the result of an extraordinary eruption. It is also possible that it was caused by a wave of charged particles from the sun, but this is unlikely because no such wave was recorded on earth. If it is the result of a strike by space rock, it could mean that a significant number of undetected large objects are presently entering our solar system, and are reaching the inner planets. If an object large enough to cause such a scar struck earth, it would be the equivalent of the impact that ended the age of the dinosaurs.

Are We Going Extinct?
03-Aug-2009

Scientists don't agree on how many mass extinction events in earth's history were triggered by a space rock crashing into the planet's surface. However, most do agree that an asteroid collision 65 million years ago (among other things) was what brought an end to the age of dinosaurs. The outer planets Saturn and Jupiter protect us from many of these potential impacts, as was shown on July 20, when a huge scar appeared on Jupiter's surface, evidence of a comet impact. However, this is not always the case, and 12,600 years ago North America was struck by a massive object that ended the ice age and gave rise to flood legends around the world.
