Bugs for Dinner

We farm fish and we certainly farm fruits and vegetables. Insects are full of protein and while Americans don't eat them, many other cultures do, so why not farm them? In the future, we may do just that (unless they get too powerful--in which case we'll probably shoot them down and eat the roadkill).

Bears Guard Pot Farm

As more and more states and countries legalize marijuana, pot farms are springing up out there. In Canada (where it is still illegal), police discovered that a marijuana farm is being guarded by trained black bears, when they tried to raid it.

Our Biggest Trash Can

Our oceans are in trouble. What happened in the past can affect the future. More than 200 million gallons of oil is estimated to have spilled into the Gulf after the April 20 blowout at BP's Deepwater Horizon, an incident which also killed 11 people. While the surface of the Gulf now looks clean and most of the beaches have been cleared of oil as well, there's still a lot of oil out there-- The explosion left an oil slick on the ocean floor. Will this be a problem in the future?

Computers R Us

The next generation of computers will try to duplicate the way the human brain works, meaning that they may be able to SEE and HEAR in the future. They may even be able to feel emotions. Meanwhile, our brains are becoming more like computers: It has been discovered that integrative body- mind training (IBMT), which was adapted from traditional Chinese medicine in the 1990s in China (where it is practiced by thousands of people) can change the part of the brain called the anterior cingulate, which regulates emotions and behavior. IBMT is not yet available in the US.

Solar Cycle Restarting

The solar cycle usually works like this: Every 11 years there is a period of intense solar activity. But the sun has been unusually quiet for years now. However, scientists have obtained evidence that a new cycle of solar activity is starting. The onset of a new wave of such activity had been expected to be well underway by 2009, but the Sun remained surprisingly quiet. Now, in 2010 there are finally signs of the cycle re-appearing. Researcher Steve Smith says, "It's exciting to see the return of aurora to mid-latitudes," referring to the periodic occurrence of emissions in the Earth's atmosphere that have intrigued observers from ancient to modern times.
