God may change the brain, but being a mother does too! (NOTE: Subscribers can still listen to this show). New Moms often feel their brains have turned to mush, but new research shows that motherhood may actually cause the brain to GROW (something they NEED in order to cope with an infant). Psychologists have found that the brains of new mothers bulked up in areas linked to motivation and behavior, and that mothers who gushed the most about their babies showed the greatest growth in key parts of the mid-brain. This means that the motivation to take care of a baby, and the other hallmark traits of motherhood, might be less of an instinctive response and more of a result of active brain building. Thanks goodness Moms’ brains tend to FORGET all that awful labor pain! Another study has found that a women’s labor experience is tied to her ethnicity and that a mother’s sensitivity to cold is tied to increased labor pain. Certain ethic types have are more sensitive to cold than others (but they don’t say which ones, so we guess you know who you are).
