For years, there has been an ongoing controversy about chemtrails. Are chemicals being sprayed into the upper atmosphere or not? Whatever you believe about what's happening behind the scenes, a number of public figures are proposing that massive amounts of chemicals be released into the upper atmosphere in order to cool the planet down. According to Scienceinsider, for example, Bill Gates has been funding research into methods of altering the stratosphere to reflect more solar energy, using chemical aerosols to absorb carbon dioxide and spraying water upward from the oceans to make over-ocean clouds a brighter white so that they will reflect sunlight back out into space more efficiently. So far, none of these ideas have been field tested, and there are a lot of questions about the safety of radically changing Earth's atmosphere, perhaps in ways that cannot be undone.
Ironically, as carbon dioxide levels have skyrocketed to their highest levels in 3 million years, conservative think-tanks such as the Cato Institute, the Hudson Institute have joined the call to explore extraordinary measures such as these. Newt Gingrich has also expressed the idea that geoengineering proposals should be explored. Envrionmentalists are so far at a loss regarding the matter.
It could be that chemicals are already being ejected into the upper atmosphere in secret. Drawing on a 1975 U.S. Navy patent for a "contrail generation apparatus" that would be used to spray reflective materials into the upper atmosphere, Dr. Edward Teller proposed in 1979 that a very large scale project be undertaken to do just that. Whether or not this is being done remains controversial, but if it is, it could be dangerously masking the true extent of global warming while also changing the atmosphere in unknown ways.
