Drug Companies May be Perpetuating an Enormous Hoax

Are most psychiatric drugs nothing more than placebos? If that's the case, then drug companies are making massive amounts of money selling patients what is actually--nothing at all. We suspect that the swine flu "epidemic" was--in large part--a "hoax" perpetrated by drug companies, but psychiatric illness are real, despite the fact that some of them, such as ADHD, may be over diagnosed.

The number of people who are so disabled by mental disorders that they qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) increased nearly two and a half times between 1987 and 2007, from one in 184 Americans to one in 76. For children, the rise is even more dramatic: a 35% increase, to the extent that mental illness is now the leading cause of disability in children. And treatment has shifted almost completely from "talk therapy" to psychoactive drugs, to the extent that almost 10% of Americans over age 6 now take antidepressants.

Researchers have found that placebos were 3 times as effective at treating mental illness as no treatment at all BUT they also find that genuine antidepressants worked only a tiny bit better than placebos: Placebos are 75% percent as effective as antidepressants. This is all based on the now discredited theory that mental illness is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.

In the June 23rd edition of the New York Review of Books, Marcia Angell quotes psychologist irving Kirsch as saying, "It now seems beyond question that the traditional account of depression as a chemical imbalance in the brain is simply wrong." Angell writes, "Are we learning to recognize and diagnose mental disorders that were always there? On the other hand, are we simply expanding the criteria for mental illness so that nearly everyone has one? And what about the drugs that are now the mainstay of treatment? Do they work? If they do, shouldn't we expect the prevalence of mental illness to be declining, not rising?

"Imagine that a virus suddenly appears in our society that makes people sleep 12, 14 hours a day. Those infected with it move about somewhat slowly and seem emotionally disengaged. Many gain huge amounts of weight--20, 40, 60, and even 100 pounds. Often their blood sugar levels soar, and so do their cholesterol levels. A number of those struck by the mysterious illness--including young children and teenagers--become diabetic in fairly short order. The federal government gives hundreds of millions of dollars to scientists at the best universities to decipher the inner workings of this virus, and they report that the reason it causes such global dysfunction is that it blocks a multitude of neurotransmitter receptors in the brain.

"Meanwhile, MRI studies find that over a period of several years, the virus shrinks the cerebral cortex, and this shrinkage is tied to cognitive decline. A terrified public clamors for a cure. Now such an illness has in fact hit millions of American children and adults. We have just described the effects of Eli Lilly’s best-selling antipsychotic, Zyprexa."

The swine flu was real because I contracted it from my 84 year old mother. Now the panic over the pandemic - that's another thing all together. It seemed at the time overblown and I don't think all aspects of the shots and nasal spray for the flu was handled as well as it could have been. Panic seemed to grip our government and I don't think I have seen such a reaction quite like that one before in my adult life. I think they reacted much like the Polio epidemic and that was very real. I remember as a 5 or 6 year old that my parents wouldn't let me and my sister go to public pools any longer and we got the shots but that was it!!!

For a fact-based approach to mental disorders, read Dr. Daniel Amen's "Healing the Hardware of the Brain." Dr. Amen doesn't do any prescribing until the patient has had a SPECT scan which indicates what parts of the brain are malfunctioning or not functioning at all. In many cases, changes in diet have been effective at resolving the underlying problem. His book should be required reading for anyone in the field.

Its been well documented, through many clinical studies that many commonly prescribed psychotropic medications, do nothing. Its also true that the pharmaceutical companies that make them don't understand how they work in the brain. What is clear is that when they do seem to be working, what is actually observed is that they actually damage the brain, and that damage causes the brain to down regulate. Since many of these drugs were developed by studying street drugs, like Cocaine, and Meth, there is also a potential to produce manic episodes in some people, those that lack the enzymes in the brain to break these drugs down. Apparently manic episodes triggered in this fashion have resulted in acts of violence. Pharmaceutical companies have given some victims of these violent acts millions in cash payments to avoid lawsuits that would damage the profitability of their products. On the other hand so called health care companies, that are run by psychiatrists, who nowadays typically receive very little training in counseling or therapy, prefer to prescribe medications to their clients than, psychotherapy. Because medication management is much more profitable for them. Typically, those on medication may see a psychiatrist twice yearly, at a cost of up to $300 a session. While a psychotherapist, may charge $150 an hour, and see someone once weekly for one to two years. This is one of the reasons why there are declining numbers of therapists, especially those that specialize in working with children.
Dr. Peter Bregin, Psychiatrist, has written of this in many of his books about psychiatry. Prescribing medications to children is a multi billion dollar industry, yet many of those drugs permanently damage children, and many of those drugs cause the very symptoms that they are being prescribed for.

I was diagnosed as bipolar when i was 23 because I had such wild mood swings. I've had them all my life--starting as an infant. I am 47 now and have been doped with every psychiatric medication that exists. Last year i decided I couldn't live like that anymore, and began examining my life to do what I could to get off the pills. One major fixer-upper was leaving my drunk abusive husband. It took a year but I finally got my self-esteem back and it only suffers when I have to go back which it appears it will because the doctors are saying he has drunk himself into pancreatic cancer and he has no one else to take care of him. So I go but I leave the instant he starts attacking me verbally. The other major change I have made is going on an 80% natural diet (because of course 20% is going to be sugary oily caffeine-y things because I'm only human) and lots of exercise. I watched Joe Cross's documentary 'Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead' on Amazon and went on a thirty day green juice fast. That was two months ago. I've lost 35 pounds of fat and put on muscle, and also began an indepth study of edible natural 'weeds'. I feel better than I ever have and highly recommend green juice for everybody who needs immediate relief. All the prozac and cymbalta and zyprexa and I could go on and on......I am still extremely emotional but I view it as a gift that makes me able to pick up vibes others can't because they're still too drugged with meds or with sugar and crap. Sometimes I have to cry; everybody does. We're human and we're changing physiologically in this crazy time of earth changes. A lot of us, I believe, are here on a one-time trip because a lot of people are going to die with the earth changes, and as the MOK says, it takes at least half the population to swing things our direction, and these new people have a higher vibratory rate than most. Listen to Whitley's past life regression.....sorry for running on. Drugs help--IF THEY ARE THE RIGHT DRUG. Most drugs are crap and useless and just Big Pharma raking in the bucks.

oops. sorry

I should add that I work full time to have insurance to pay for the drugs I have been on. If I were taking everything they cost at least 1200 a month without insurance and at least 300 a month WITH excellent insurance. It's a big ripoff. Meditation, exercise, no processed foods. Examine WHY you are having feelings instead of trying to smother them. It is not okay to have emotions these days. That's bullshit. Doctors are necessary and we are lucky to have them. Sometimes a psychiatrist is necessary. A good therapist is much better but they are rare. I have a superb combination if anybody lives in Utah and needs a reference.

Feeling feelings sometimes hurts but not feeling kills.

I think therapy can be of enormous help. But it's not the "quick fix" most people want. I see many, many children working in a school settings on meds, and eating crap daily, no excercise, or therapy. I think many of these children could be off meds, or lower them, if their parents would wake up and feed these kids something that's alive and has real nutrients, and no chemicals. But they're too lazy or believe the doctors over common sense. What's going to happen to society when all these kids grow up???

There are lots of wonderful, life-saving drugs and vaccines out there. There are also some highly questionable ones out there as well. I deal with medical providers a lot in my work, and I can tell you that they do not always know much about what they are prescribing or how it works on the body/mind.

About 20 years ago, I discovered in the space of about 5 days that my father was dying of cancer and also that my position was being eliminated at the bank (I had worked my way up from the bottom in banking and was an officer at the time). This was a lot of horrible news coming down at the same time. A week later I happened to go in for my one-year checkup after the birth of my son. The OBGYN asked if there was anything going on in my life that he needed to be aware of, and I told him of the recent events in my life. He immediately sat down to write a prescription for tranquilizers to help get me through it. I told him that was not necessary, and that there are times when we need to feel the pain and experience loss, and that I certainly did not want to be numbed down, and that I SHOULD feel pain over the loss of my career and the impending death of my father. The doctor's jaw dropped, then he told me to please reconsider if it all became "too much to bear."

I am so glad that I had the wisdom to tell that doctor, "No, thank you."

Clozaril can cause 4 potentially life-threatening adverse events.
