Researchers have found a link between a lack of exposure to sunlight, specifically ultraviolet B (UVB), and breast cancer. UVB exposure helps create vitamin D3 in the body, which can you can also get from your diet and from supplements, if you don't have enough chances to get out in the sun. But vitamins may be BAD for you.
Science Daily quotes researcher Cedric F. Garland as saying, "In general, breast cancer incidence was highest at the highest latitudes in both hemispheres. Even after controlling for known variables such as meat, vegetable and alcohol intake, cigarette consumption, weight, fertility and others, the inverse association of modeled vitamin D status with breast cancer incidence remained strong."
Since smoking promotes breast cancer as well, maybe the new laws that force smokers to go outside to take cigarette breaks will cause these two tendencies to cancel each other out?
And what is it about vitamin supplements?are they good or bad? Research shows certain vitamin supplements not only do not extend life, they could even lead to early death.
BBC News reports that some researchers think that taking vitamins A and E may interfere with the body's natural defenses, because these supplements seem to increase mortality.
Between 10 and 20% of people in developed countries take vitamins daily, and we don't really need them, since unlike people living in poor countries, we should be able to get everything we need from food. Vitamin A, which boosts the immune system and helps skin, sight and sperm formation, is found in: oily fish, eggs and liver. Vitamin C, which helps heal wounds and helps the body in absorb iron (and may also boost the immune system) is found in many fruit and vegetables. Vitamin E, which may boost circulation and is especially helpful for seniors, is found in vegetable oils, seeds and nuts. Beta-carotene, which help vision and keeps our mind sharp, is found in orange vegetables. Selenium, which is again good for the immune system, is in butter, nuts, liver and fish.
