Is China Really Our Friend?

In China, the country that is supposed to be our good friend and trading partner, books, movies and video games glorifying the Sept. 11 strikes are selling like hotcakes. Most of these are actually being produced and distributed by the government. Videos and DVDs have added dramatic background music to news clips of airplanes crashing into the World Trade Center.

Right after the attacks occurred on Sept. 11, government-controlled Beijing TV worked day and night to produce an anti-American documentary called Attack America. When they didn?t have enough actual 911 footage, they added scenes from old Godzilla movies, with Godzilla attacking Manhattan.

In the documentary, a voice-over says, "This is the America the whole world has wanted to see. Blood debts have been repaid in blood. America has bombed other countries and used its hegemony to deny the natural rights of others without paying the price. Who until now has dared to avenge the hurts inflicted by unaccountable Americans." The commentary on another anti-U.S. video says, "Look at the panic in their faces as they wipe off the dust and crawl out of their strong buildings -- now just a heap of rubble. We will never fear these people again, they have been shown to be soft-bellied paper tigers."

Beijing Television says their documentary is an educational film.

We once thought Iran and Iraq were our friends. We?re now friendly with Russia, Pakistan and China. Maybe we should be a little more careful, because with friends like these?..
