Art Bell Returns to the Air

Legendary radio host Art Bell is returning to the air on September 16 on Sirius XM Satellite Radio with a late-night program called 'Art Bell's Dark Matter.' Art ended his regular hosting of Coast to Coast AM in 2002, and has not been on the air since Halloween of 2010. The show will air from 10PM to 1AM Eastern Time, and Art will have total freedom to do exactly what he wants. Unlike terrestrial radio, satellite broadcasts are not subject to the constraints imposed by regulatory authorities. The program will not compete directly with Coast to Coast AM, which starts nationwide as 'Dark Matter' leaves the air. 'Dark Matter' will cover the paranormal, UFOs, shadow people and all the wildness of the night. It will be a mix of talk, interviews and open lines.

Dick Hoagland and our own Whitley Strieber are bound to be frequent guests again. Will we also see a return of characters like the inimitable "JC" with his unforgettably surrealistic vision of the Bible, and Mel, of 'Mel's Hole' fame? With Art hosting the show, the only answer can be 'who knows?'

Sirius XM is available by subscription on any device with access to the internet. Sirius players are also available and the system is present in many cars, and can be added using aftermarket radios.

Retiring and as part of the large number of Americans who even as "middle class" approach living on the edge of poverty an old fan like me will not be able to afford such a subscription for a broadcast of any kind. What I would miss most would be when Whitley is a guest on Art's show. My Unknowncountry subscription is the only one I can afford and justify in this economic "age"! Times have changed and economically it is not getting any better. I am very grateful that I can be a part of Unknowncountry and continue to benefit from all of the resources available here.
It is wonderful for Art and those who can either afford Sirius or will be able and willing to sacrifice 15 to 20 dollars a month for the privilege of being able to listen to his show. I am sorry. I think it is absurd. I am going to retire next June and although I will be receiving social security, a public employee’s retirement pension and have my employer pick up the 20% medicare doesn’t pay for medical for the rest of my life, I cannot afford to shell out 15 to 20 dollars a month just to hear Art. There will probably be a lot of people who in the excitement will start subscriptions but after a few months as the novelty wears off they will realize the economic realities. I was a long time fan of his show all through the ’90s and I wish Art well in his endeavor. I for one cannot justify the cost in this age of “poverty” we middle class and others are settling into. Reminds me of the book, "Nickel and Dimed: On Not Getting By In America" by Barbara Ehrenreich!

All I had to do was read the headline - AWESOME!

*edit* Art's gonna get rich! Art Bell is back and I couldn't be more delighted. He has, in my opinion, taken a realistic and realist view towards his guests and topics and since he can do what he wants - "who knows?"

I just hope he has gotten over his Libertarian kick/fad. ;-)

Hi, just wanted to make you aware that you can get the first month free. It's an offer sirius always has for new members it seams. You just have to make sure you CANCEL before your paid subscription starts. I know you can't afford it, but just in case you were interested, you can at least take the first free month to catch up with Art.

Affordability - I canceled Sirius Radio two years ago. I was paying 14 and change a month to have it in my car. The type of music I listen to is free via public radio here in Los Angeles (88.1), out of Long Beach State University.

I might join again for free just to listen to Art for 30 days. Not liking talk radio in general due the majority of stations feeding propaganda from Libertarians and Neo Right thinking talking-heads prompted me to quit listening to C2C after Art left. I found Art to be a bit to conservative from my views but he is a cat man! LOL His loyalty to his family has been another plus along with his moderate views. He's reasonable and he explores topic objectively.

Let's see how the show goes.

Good Luck ART!

HOORAY!

This will be great, and hopefully "coast" will stay on with xm (rumor is it might not stay on) as well. We will get a great overload of all the stuff we love with both shows and add in "ground zero" and it will be potentially a triple whammy!

Coast to coast am was only on xm due to a contract they had with clear channel who, before the merger with Sirius, owned a minority stake in XM. C2C will be off SiriusXM for good sometime around 9/31/13 as per there recent statements & Dave has also said so on C2C which is DOA on 9/16/13...
