What's wrong with Horror Movies?
30-Oct-2009

No good now?
This Halloween season, most of the current horror flicks are a bore. Some of them are actually (unintentionally) funny. Maybe the problem is that Americans have too many real things to be scared about.

Pop culture guru Rob Weiner says, "The recent slate of horror movies is pathetic. They aren't scary. There's nothing that captures the imagination. It's like Hollywood ran out of ideas. It's a really sorry state of affairs [and] audiences deserve better."

How do you convince horror-savvy audiences to continue jumping at the same old bumps in the night? How much deeper can scriptwriters dig into their bag of tricks and twists and gimmicks to surprise viewers? How do you create another "Exorcist" when horror fans are over demonic possessions? How do you create another "Dracula" when vampires are busy vamping in teen romance novels? It’s no wonder moviemakers have increasingly stooped for the gross- out, using gore to create horror in audiences rather than reaching for more elusive and complex feelings of terror.

Weiner thinks change will come from abroad. "It will probably be someone we try to emulate, like we have with the Italians and Japanese in the past."

We have millions of fans from those countries (and from all over the world) who tell us they love us. But for us to continue to be here for them (and you), you need to show us. There are lots of ways to do this, like shopping in our store for our incredibly popular books The Path and The Key. You can give us even more love by clicking the "donate" button on our home page. But the BEST thing you can do is subscribe today, and save 10% on those great purchases.
