Early Christian Chapel Now a Prison
21-Nov-2005

The place where St John the Divine, in Revelation 16:16, prophesied the "war to end all wars" is now the high-security prison of Megiddo, where the Israelis send the hardest Palestinian cases. Could this fortress be the site of an incredible war in the future?

Eric Silver writes in the Independent that underneath the concrete fortress, Israeli archeologists have discovered one of the earliest known Christian chapels. It has a beautiful mosaic tile floor inscribed with a Greek dedication to "the God Jesus Christ," and discovered when a new wing was being built on the prison. The chapel is believed to date to the late third or early fourth centuries, when the Roman conquerors still outlawed Christian worship.

Muslim prisoners cleared the floor of the chapel, revealing an image of a pair of fish.
