I’ve talked about green, I’ve talked about blue, now I’m going to talk about pink—Pepto-Bismol pink, which is soothing not just because it’s the color of a notably gentle medication. The color itself is soothing, so much so that it’s often found on the walls of mental hospitals.

While I’m no mental case, I am under the care of some of the best doctors in the world, and I always take the medicines that they give me. But sometimes I think I need some good old liquid Pepto-Bismol. It’s so funny to be taking medicine that I took when I was a kid. I even have some Pepto-Bismol pink pajamas.

Pepto-Bismol was invented in 1901, and has been used ever since to provide mild antacid and anti-diarrheal effects. Having been on chemotherapy for a year (I recently completed the course!) I’ll let you guess which one I use it for.

The chemotherapy agent I was on, Temodar, can cause irritation of the colon and stomach, (Oh, yes it can!) and I find this hundred and thirteen year old over the counter medication to be the gentlest and most effective thing I can take for those side effects.

It‘s so funny to be taking a medicine that old—and which I also took when I was a kid, as most of us did—to help with the side effects of one of the most modern, and effective, cancer fighters in the world.

I’m glad my cancer showed up after Temodar was invented—it is a real miracle. But I’m also glad that good old Pepto is still around. It works, too!

As Eve Arden said in that great Audrey Hepburn film, Funny Face, “think pink!”

I love Pepto-Bismol!…especially when I’m on my celery-only crash diet. Celery will put your intestines into OVERDRIVE. Pepto-Bismol is a life-saver…that and Metamucil ®. 🙂

You sound great Anne! I’ve been praying for you throughout all of this and I’m very sanguine you’ll pull through. Too dynamic and necessary and wonderful person not to. 🙂

And I didn’t realize Pepto-Bismol was that old! I get acid reflux frequently and I find that it works as well if not better than the modern prescription stuff.

Anyway hang in there Anne! We all love you. As a subscriber you and Whitley and everyone involved with Unknowncountry.com have been and are like family to me.
