Christmas is the time to contemplate miracles and medicine has come up with a big one. After major accidents, we’re all used to hearing calls from blood donors on the radio, especially those with rare blood types. But this wouldn’t be such a problem if we could get blood from a person’s skin. It sounds like a zombie movie, but it’s true: Scientists have now discovered how to do this.
This discovery could mean that in the foreseeable future, people needing blood for surgery, cancer treatment or treatment of other blood conditions like anemia will be able to have blood created from a patch of their own skin to provide transfusions. Now people who are going to be operated on often come into the hospital a week or so beforehand to get in a store of their blood, in case it’s needed. In the future, all you’ll need to contribute will be a skin patch.
