This is one for the "Duh!" category, if you've ever owned a dog and cared for it. Apparently scientists are the only ones that haven't figured it out yet.

mru

cloe, the rottie, was my son's dog. he got her as a baby.

whenever bryn would go to florida to visit his dad, she was fine-acted as usual.

but any time he had to go to the hospital, she'd go out to a corner of the yard and lay down and not eat or drink til he came home.

she knew the difference between an innocent trip or emergency.

after he passed away, she'd lay her big old head on my lap and her eyes were so sad it broke my heart.

dogs DO mourn.
sure you can trust the government....just ask an indian.

No doubt Susi

They've got a poll up on the Yahoo front page right now, not sure it'll be there for long but here are the results:

Do you think animals experience grief?

Yes, they mourn just like humans, 95%
No, I'm not convinced, 5%

I have a theory. I think they sense or see what their humans do.

How else can you explain their behavior before going to the Vets or getting a bath?

We'd only have to think it and they'd run the other way!

The 5% have either never lived with a Dog or they are too dumb to notice.

Of course, they mourn.

They also know when they are nearing their time to cross...and they tell when they are ready...and ask for help.

Sharon,

Dogs are known to know the meanings of over 600 words.

If they hear you say, "I have to take the Dog to the Vet for a bath, they know what the words Vet and bath mean...and that nothing good is going to come from it (as far as they are concerned).

Dogs are incredibly smart...and they do grieve because they are sad that their friend is no longer alive. I have always had my animals put down at home with the other animals there.

I always explain to all of them what is going to happen (I express it visually and with words)...exactly what is going to happen.

The last words they hear are always: It is OK to leave. I love you so much. Thank you so much for being my best friend and taking care of me. I love you. You can come back as a spirit and visit us. We will miss you dearly. Bye, sweet one...wait for us to join you."

Then I leave their beds down for at least a month so the other animals can pay their respects to where the Dog is lying when it comes back. All my other animals will go up to the bed with the spirit sleeping on it and give the Dog their respects and nuzzle them...even in spirit form.

I posted on my blog what Roscoe and his Coyote animal spirit did to us on their way out of town. It was so Roscoe and Coyote. It was really funny. The Vet even knew it was him. Check it out.

The blog addy is in my signature. Roscoe crossed August 2010. Shadow followed him a year and a day later.

They are amazing animals.

They are also telepathic.
