As a vocal major in college, I've always had a special love for a cappella music. Enjoy

Buddie,

You asked to recall 1st slow dance
tune. I always remember this one and I was
young. But there are others, I just always
like this song...I was happy to find it. The video behind it is nice but I was just a young teen when I remember it. The live version of the
song I found but the sound was really off and muffly. I had to use this one to get the good sound of the song. I have the sheet music for
it as well and love to play it on piano.

Hmmm... first slow dance was this. I was a sophomore at Roswell High School. Since both photographers for the yearbook had dates, I was recruited to take pictures at the Jr/Sr prom. I think the theme was Colour My World, they played it like 5 or 6 times that night. Since I didn't have a date, took pics and was able to dance with some of the "older" girls.
Ah the memories of youth.

Buddie, what a great way to walk down memory lane, and remember the soundtracks to our lives!!!!

My first slow dance doesn't really count, in terms of what we usually think of as a "first slow dance", because it was with my Father, in 1965, at a Christmas party at a private "club".

This was the song we danced to:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUXmj3Fl7x0&feature=related

My first slow dance with a boy .....

....was in late July of 1966. I had just turned 13, and was allowed to attend my first "party" at a school friend's house.

I had a mad crush on one of two brothers, who were identical twins.

The brother I had the crush on was a good dancer, both slow and fast, and a really good kisser! (This was only the second boy I had kissed!!)

To this day, I can still remember the way his kiss felt, and how good he smelled, and I can even remember the way the cool concrete of the patio felt on my feet on that HOT day.

This was the song we danced our first slow dance to:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8raabzZNqw

I didn't dance with a boy again until the middle of the 1967 school year, at a school casual "playnight" dance.

These dances were the kind where you were asked to bring your own records. I took a number of my Beatles records.

As I sat with my girl friend along the sides of the dance floor, an incredibly cute boy (who, with his baby face, cherub lips, big brown eyes and Beatle haircut, looked for all the world like Paul McCartney) came over with a buddy of his, and they sat down, one on either side of us girls.

The cutie pie then asked me if I wanted to dance.
After we danced a couple of fast dances, and sat down to rest, he asked me if I wanted to dance with him for the next slow dance.

I said yes, but that I wanted to dance to a certain song from the Revolver album. So,we went and requested it of the teacher who was spinning the records. Believe it or not, I actually asked the teacher to please handle my album with care! (I was raised that way, thank goodness!)

This was the slow song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9SxXWui7gM

****sigh****

Sorry I told about more than one "first dance", but, well........***shrugs***

OMG, Mama!!!!????

Have you seen the Depp version of AIW?

I have not seen it yet. I'm kind of afraid to see it, even thought I am fascinated.

But OMG! That SONG!!!!! AND THAT VID!!!

Criminey!!!

And can someone please tell me what the creature is at 2:31?????

Good God. I used to have recurring nightmares about creatures like that when I was a kid.

Is it the "hookah-smoking catterpillar"?

OK, fine. I will rent the video. But I don't think I can tolerate it in 3-D.

First, due to vertigo problems and vision problems, I "can't do" 3-D.

Secondly, I don't have a 3-D TV.

And third, I don't think I would be able to keep my sanity from seeing it in 3D.

But, really, more than that, I am just not willing to risk an attack of vertigo.

But anyway......I am not at all surprised that you would post that video/bring up this film, on this particular night/morning!

Have you seen this one?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIQsZEdiju4&feature=relmfu

Good Lord!!!

Gotta buck up my courage, plow through my fear, and see the film.......and see what "comes up".

Also gotta get the soundtrack!

I love you, Mama. You get me, I think. And I think, at least sometimes, I get you.

Forgot to say to chesserw......ahhhhh, Chicago. That song is one of my favorites! And what a beautiful performance that one is!!!

R.I.P. Terry Kath.

So sad...less that a year later, he was gone. Yet another casualty to the times and the life of a rock and roll band. I guess we will never really know the truth about his death.

Loved your story about the "older girls"!!! And if I knew already, I had forgotten that you were from Roswell. (You do mean, NM, right?)

chesserw, I just checked out your profile, and went to your blog.

Life is so interesting and amazing.

Your recommendation of the movie "The Peaceful Warrior" stood right out!!!.

I bought the book a long time ago, I think in the late 90s. I found it in a sale bin at B&N, and fell for the faint way the descriptions on the jacket, as well as the original artwork on the jacket, reminded me of Castaneda's early books.

I tried several times to read it, and never was able to get or stay interested. I don't really remember now why.

I finally gave it away to the library.

I will check out the movie. Perhaps it will be a different situation.

(sorry...off the music topic....)

SW,

Yep, I saw the Avril one....I have another
but now I can't think. lemme go look.

Sw, we prolly understand each other as much as its allowed...dunno why I said that but I don't matter. Music is slippery, it gets by the controllers, eh? Don't mind me, I'm rambling.

Thank you, Mama. I understand what you mean about "as much as it's allowed". I understand it on more than one level.

Yes, music is slippery. It CAN get by them....but, sadly, sometimes it can be used by them, as well.

Slippery, indeed.

Regardless.....it's one of the few joys in life that there is just no way I will let any fear of ill manipulation push me away from.

Even though my intense reactions to music have been a "vulnerability" for me, in some serious ways, from a very early age......the joy is worth it.

And I don't mind you one bit. I will wait to see if you find the other one from "Alice".....and, perhaps I will just go into denial about what I have learned about "Alice in Wonderland" programming!

I posted it.

Yes, when I was 3 years old I was deeply addicted to Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto and would cry for hours and scream for it...I could go on and on...but the joy of music calmed me as well. Its a slippery subject and I'll just refrain from talking about how sensitive people are misunderstood. I've gotten to where I don't mind, for the most part. I'm just yakking too much today...it'll pass, it always does.

Mama, that Jefferson Starship song is one of my all-time favorite love songs.

It is both emotionally intense, as well as deeply sensual/outright sexual.

Have you ever noticed that?

If not, here are the lyrics:

If only you believe
like I believe, baby
We'd get by
If only you believe in miracles, baby
So would I
If only you believe like I believe, baby
We'd get by
If only you believe in miracles, baby
So would I

I might have to move heaven and earth
to prove it to you, baby
So we're makin' love
and you feel the power
And I feel the power
Then there's really nothing that we can't do
If we wanted to
We could exist on the stars
It'd be so easy
All we gotta do
Is have a little faith in you

Oh, I've been (to) so many places
I've seen some things
I know, love is the answer
Keeps holding this world together
Ain't nothing better
Ain't nothing better

And all the answers to our prayers
Hell, it's the same everywhere, baby
Nothing ever breaks up the heart
Only tears give you away

Then you're right where I found ya
With my arms around ya
Oh baby, baby, baby,
love is a magic word, yeah
Few ever find in a lifetime
But from that very first look in your eyes
I knew you and I had but one heart
Only our bodies were apart
That was so easy, so easy
I had a taste of the real world
(don't waste a drop of it)
When I went down on you, girl
(don't ever stop it)

If only you believe like I believe, baby
We'd get by
If only you believe in miracles, baby
So would i
If only you believe like I believe, baby
We'd get by
If only you believe in miracles, baby
So would i.

I can hear windmills and rainbows
Whenever you're talkin' to me
I feel like swirling and dancin'
Whenever you're walking with me

You ripple like a river when I touch you
When I pluck your body like a string
When I start dancin' inside ya
Oh baby, you make me wanna sing
Yeah, baby, baby, baby, baby
Oh yeah, all right
Baby, we're sure doin' it tonight
Everytime you come by, let me try
Pretty, please sugar on it
That's how I like it
I can't even believe it, with you
It's like having every dream I ever wanted
Come true
I picked up your vibes
You know it opened my eyes
But I'm still dreamin' yeah
And you're right where I found ya
With my arms around ya.

WHEW!!!!!!!

******SW Cries and remembers*****

But, anyway.......

Even though they did a good job of editing on that vid......the song is **not** from the movie.

The smart-alec and the music trivia SNOB in me feels the need to point that out.

Anyway.....yeah...the curse of us "sensitives"......

The song that set me off at age 5, was an instrumental version of this song. This is the closest I can find to what I remember hearing in about 1958.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiSuP19suPU

My parents were so taken by the fact that I was sobbing over this song, that they sat me down and taught me the lyrics....which, of course, just made me cry more....even though, at that age, I don't know that I understood the actual context for the song (a person in prison).....

but, perhaps I did.

As for "talking about it", well, you were the one who said, both in this thread, and elsewhere, that you will say what you feel, any time you feel like it.

I hope you won't stop now.

But then, I know that I want to much.......

Back to the subject of first dances.........

(Watch out for the volume on the short ads at the start of these Mellencamp vids...)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KF0gsbQKhD8&feature=related

"That's when a sport was a sport
and groovin' was groovin'
Dancin' meant everything
We were young, and we were improvin'
Laughing, laughing with our friends
Holding hands meant something, Baby
Outside the Club Cherry Bomb,
Our hearts were really pumpin'"

Wow...the images in this song are so spot-on to the memories we have been describing......

Tee Hee love the little stories..
We had a home made dance party in
my friends barn..the music was
what ever 45s we could find..
we were all just a group of friends
on summer holiday..
we put names in a hat and whichever
name you got was the person you danced
with..for the slow dances the guys
drew the names..this guy had a crush
on me and switched names until he got
mine..he was cute but I didn't much
like him I liked his cousin..
This is the song he picked..so we
ended up basically not moving at all
just cheek to cheek..smart *ss boy :-)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loyRYFUYg9g

When I started going to Real Dances I
had a huge crush on Bernie and when he
asked me to slow dance I was sooo nervous
to this day I can't recall the song :-)

Shark's favorite song:

AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long

...and a lot of other people's also based on the number of hits it has gotten.

From Shark:

Second Wind: Yep, Good ol Roswell NM it is! If you run Google earth and look at what is still left of the air force base, and take the longest runway that runs SW to NE and go about 5 miles SW you will see the what use to be the farm/ranch I grew up on. Unfortunately, my dad passed away in 1980 which was before I really knew about the incident there. I would have liked to asked him some questions about it, because freshly out of the Navy from WWII he was working at the base saving money to buy the place, so he was there at the time it happened.

I apologize to all for going off topic here. We now return to our regularly schedule of music.

Another one of my often dream scenarios
is along the south shore of lake Pontchartrain
from when I lived over in New Orleans. I spent
so much time from the end of Elysian Fields along the seawall to west end, etc. Anyway folks were gathered there and for some reason
Charlie Sheen was dressed in a dark conservative suit and was yakking at me as we walked along the seawall...I left him at west end near a place called the point. Walked back to the place I was at and a young child was hungry. I said there a Burger King nearby. Then a white
bird landed on a column that was near us it was about 3 feet high and white. The bird looked like a seagull but its face was younger and the beak a little different. The boy wanted to pet the bird and they won't usually let you but this bird let the child stroke ts feathers and it was lovely...I was at peace with it and wondered if I could pet the bird as well but I woke up.
