One of my most-liked electronic musical composers in the genre of adult contemporary is Suzanne Ciani, who was most popular with CI fans a quarter century ago. Yet, as with other musicians within the genre, and as opposed to one-hit-wonders or those singer/songwriters whose music speaks for their time period, AC music never grows outdated. It exists outside of human history. Like it was written on another plane of existence. Eighties' rap is out. Eighties' rock is passe. Check out those hairdos on those band-members! But music like that of Suzanne Ciani remains as fresh as it was when first heard. The following capsule reviews of mine chart Ciani's path within the genre, spotlighting her first four accomplishments. 1982, SEVEN WAVES *****/***** This was Ciani's reverie-inducing debut, originally released in Japan. It is unique among the electronic composer's oeuvre in that it plays best, heard as an album-length recording, separated into “waves,” or seamlessly connected movements. The experimental-sounding “Birth Of Venus" opens things with its spacey, woo-woo-ish sci-fi-like notes that are oh so seventh-heavenly to the earshell. Sparkling and undulatory, “Sirens,” the wondrous second spiller, is evocative of drifting atop a magical, meandering stream, carried along by massaging waves warm, pristine, and brimming with foam, their soft crashes emitting crystalized spindrift. “Love In The Waves" is equally aurally blissful as its predecessor. One can almost breathe in the album's redolence, its hint of salty seaweed in the air. With “Sailing Away" a lovely finisher, capping off the watery dreamscape as I hear and see it via multi-colored and shimmering disco-dancing soap globules. The deliciously fluid Seven Waves is alternately nascent and vintage Ciani, a musical art-piece that captures a moment in time when the sound painter seemed at her most creative, inspired. 1985, THE VELOCITY OF LOVE *****/***** Hypnotizing and beautifully ethereal right from the get-go, I wouldn't be able to successfully wax lyrical about how much I love this album even if I tried. The first composition picks up right where the 1982 album left off, what with one more “wave” remaining – the (shimmering) eighth. At just over a half-hour in length, The Velocity Of Love leaves you wanting more. This is the synthesist at her most mesmerizingly romantic – home to an astral-plane decor of softly lit ceramic lounges. Some of the synthesized notes played on track 2 contain an Oriental tinge, like biting into an egg roll. With “Malibuzios” my favorite Ciani song of all: so graceful, plush and pearly, this is. The entire album is a glistening, emeralded treasure. To hear something as mundane and base as a dog bark or the dissonance of power-tools upon the immediate exiting of this bejewelled celestial Elysium is to experience genuine and abject bubble-bursting. 1988, NEVERLAND ***/***** Here the synthesist begins to inch ever so closer to the sound of her follow-up album, introducing an aesthetic, literary element to her flowing and pianoey instrumentals, and easing off on the otherworldly qualities her two previous entries had shared in common – exemplified in the frilly, uplifting opener, through to the trickling keys of “Adagio.” Although very pretty in parts, this is Ciani caught in a musical transition, between her synthesizer-dominant past and her eventual evolution toward the inclusion of instruments other than the keyboard. Ciani had studied music composition at Berkeley and Neverland certainly is the most “academic” sounding of all her albums, a CD that nicely complements sunny, espresso-scented hardwood-floored lofts adorned with spine-lined bookshelves and interspersed glassbowls decorated with fresh fruit. With tracks 3-5 the highlights of this otherwise mediocre creation. 1991, HOTEL LUNA ****/***** With Hotel Luna, Ciani developed her sound, in the layered sense, incorporating non-electronic instruments, such as mandolin (as heard on “Italia”) and violins (“Festa”), providing her audio material with a fuller and seasoned flavor. But is it necessarily better than her earlier less garnished achievements? Yes and no. True, the songs are more richly textured and polished. Ciani's music has “aged” in the same way that fine wine does; no more telling than in the hospitable-toned title track that warmly invites the listener inside this interior – a homey, refreshing aubade, that plays as cozily as sipping on a cup of hot coffee inside a quiet, waterside cafe, the zephyr wafting through the open windows of this quaint, overseas oasis. Here the character of this song sits, in solitude, staring out at the ocean, in recognition of having attained a sense of inner peace, in acknowledgement of having found herself, of having come into her own. And, yet, with Hotel Luna the electronic composer has seemingly relinquished her conductive, collaborative past for the structured studio, and thus it is arguable which of the two eras ('80s' Ciani or '90s' Ciani) are more artistically quintessential. Unlike Seven Waves and The Velocity Of Love, Hotel Luna offers a variety of moods: from the moody, stormy, cloaked and cowled “Maremosso” to the playful and tipsy “Rain,” the album contains more (range of) emotion than Ciani's earlier releases. “Ondine” is reflective. “Love Song,” elegant. “Italia” says it all. Then there is the exquisite “Festa,” a neo-classical piece that evokes the image of an outdoors, patio-set performance, as the entertainment to a formal garden party. | ||

Good Lord! I love this thread so much! And I love youtube so much! I don't know how many times over the past 5 years I have thanked various people for posting vids to music I have never heard before, and that I end up blown away by! SO many times! I know I have said it before, but I have to repeat, that two of the best things in life, are (1) discovering or being introduced to amazing music, and (2) introducing other people to amazing music, and have them be as touched or blown away as I was. Goodness, is there NO END to the amazing music out there to discover??????  Mama, thank you for the post to Parov Stelar........  I know what my next music purchases will be....and I can't wait to play some of their songs for my sister!!!!! (You know....my sister, who I have a love-hate relationship with?)
