If you're into the electric guitar you might want to give The Jeff Healey Band, from Canada (Toronto, Ontario to be exact) a try, if you're not already familiar with this trio. The late great Jeff Healey (who gave a cameo in 1989's Road House) was blind and played the guitar often resting on its back, on his lap while seated. He also had a very good bluesy-style singing voice. His two best albums, in my opinion, are his first two: See The Light (1990) and Hell To Pay (1996). I love "Confidence Man." And the ending to "See The Light" is quite remarkable (as far as a sightless man playing electric guitar goes). On Hell To Pay I like "Full Circle" and "Life Beyond The Sky" the best, although the entire CD is vintage Healey. Other Canadian bands and musical artists – and there are quite a number of them – that were quite popular on the radio not too long ago here, alongside The Barenaked Ladies, The Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo, Glass Tiger, The Jitters, World On Edge, Gino Vannelli, Ian Thomas, The Cowboy Junkies, Paul Janz, Bryan Adams, Corey Hart, The Philosopher Kings, Kim Mitchell, et al, were The Crash Test Dummies. None of the musicians I've listed are favorites of mine. (Jeff Healey remains my favorite home-grown musical artist.) However, I do enjoy select songs and albums from those mentioned above. Running through this short list... The Barenaked Ladies I like “Enid” but otherwise I'll pass. The Tragically Hip I like their first four releases most of all: The Tragically Hip; Up To Here; Road Apples; with Fully Completely being my favorite release of theirs. I think their music went downhill after that. Blue Rodeo I like a handful of their songs, but otherwise they're too Country music (i.e. square) for me. The song “Lost Together" and their album Casino is at least listenable. Glass Tiger A little too “Pop” for my liking, I played their records over and over while growing up. Glass Tiger had many hits though some of their songs quickly became tedious after a while due to the overplay they got on the radio. Still, their albums Thin Red Line and Diamond Sun are good introductions to their “'80s sound.” The Jitters They released an album in 1990 called Louder Than Words. To this day I still love it. My favorite songs off this release are “The Bridge Is Burning,” “The Fever Breaks,” and “If I Could Be There.” World On Edge This Pop-Rock group was a bit of a one-hit wonder. Their 1990 self-titled album made a mark – particularly with the song “Still Beating" – but then they were no longer heard from again, or at least never were as successful. Gino Vannelli Lots of music-lovers have heard of this artist and know of his '80s hits (“Wild Horses," and “Black Cars," for example). Still, my favorite album of Vannelli's was 1991's Inconsolable Man. The ballads “Cry Of Love," and “If I Should Lose This Love" are very moving. And the song “The Time Of Day" contains a chorus with an important message (“Don't give the Devil the time of day!”). Ian Thomas Ian Thomas is the brother of comedian Dave Thomas (no, not the founder of Wendy's). From Hamilton, Ontario, Thomas went on to form the group The Boomers, whose 2004 album What We Do is worth checking out. The Cowboy Junkies Pass. Paul Janz If you love romantic ballads and other dreamy light songs then you will probably enjoy Paul Janz's music. His song “Believe In Me" is one of his most popular recordings. Born in Alberta, Canada, Janz made the charts here when he hit his musical peak with his excellent second album Renegade Romantic. Burton Cummings I never was much of a fan of this artist's music, until Plus Signs was released. To me it remains the musician's best album. Every single song is good, from "Workaday," "Take One Away," to the wonderful closer, "Free," with its relaxing guitar solo mid-way through. Bryan Adams Probably Canada's most prolific rocker, I like some of his '80s' stuff. His best album, in my opinion, is Into The Fire. Corey Hart Out of Montreal, Quebec, Hart topped the Canadian charts with his '80s hit, “Never Surrender.” The Philosopher Kings I like their 1996 self-titled album. My favorite song is their most popular one: “Charms.” Kim Mitchell To sum up this man's music in one word: fun. This guy knew how to rock! If you aren't familiar with this cool character and love your R&R, then I recommend listening to his I Am A Wild Party (live) album. Crash Test Dummies Their 1993 album God Shuffled His Feet (here linked below) is worth a listen. My favorite song of theirs is “Swimming In Your Ocean.” “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" is also good (see if you can sing along with the chorus ). Their music videos are worth checking out, too. They hail from Winnipeg, Manitoba. http://www.amazon.com/Shuffled-Feet-Crash-Test-Dummies/dp/B000002VKU/ref=sr_1_1? s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1299518103&sr=1-1 (Message edited by foundgoat on March 08, 2011) |

I'm in the mood for a few songs to send out in "dedication" to certain "people" in my life, present and past, and both "real" and "virtual". I think I'll start with this one! (note...I really dislike posting vids from vevo with ads, but this is the actual original version, in good quality, of an incredible song and video.) I'm Still Standing! You could never know what it's like Your blood like winter freezes just like ice And there's a cold lonely light that shines from you You'll wind up like the wreck you hide behind that mask you use And did you think this fool could never win? Well look at me, I'm coming back again I got a taste of love in a simple way And if you need to know, while I'm still standing you just fade away Don't you know I'm still standing better than I ever did Looking like a true survivor Feeling like a little kid I'm still standing after all this time Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah Once I never could hope to win You starting down the road leaving me again The threats you made were meant to cut me down And if our love was just a circus you'd be a clown by now Don't you know I'm still standing better than I ever did Looking like a true survivor Feeling like a little kid I'm still standing after all this time Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF7pCzi9LNM Sometimes I wonder if I’m still alive How much abuse can someone stand and survive How long I’ve waited for this day to arrive When I won’t be a fool no more Nobody knows how you push me around Nobody sees how you treat me like I’m your clown I never made a sound It’s the very last time you will get on my case It’s the very last time ’cause I won’t be a fool no more It’s the very last time you will step on my face It’s the very last time ’cause I won’t be a fool no more I still remember the look in your eyes Just a reflection of the things you despise But sooner or later I’ve got to get wise And I won’t be a fool no more Nobody sees how you treat me like dirt Nobody knows just how badly a man can hurt You’ve got a lesson to learn I can still feel the sting of your words But I won’t cry no matter how much it hurts My head may go crazy, my heart it may burst But I won’t be a fool no more No I won’t be a fool no more "In the end, only kindness matters."

Sometimes songs that are written about "love gone bad", are appropriate for other, non-romantic, relationships gone bad. So, this one goes out to both types of these "bad relationships" I've known.......
From Todd's 2004 album, Liars http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESjGeyF3YwE You could be my everything You almost have it all You'd be perfect But you've got one fatal flaw My Baby We could live so happily The envy of them all But that'll never happen Cause you've got one fatal flaw Oh, Yeah And all my friends, they look at me Say "that's a 'ten'", and I agree That you are a mad love maker I know I should accept it all And overlook the little faults But this one's a real deal breaker Cause you could be my everything You almost have it all You'd be perfect But you've got one fatal flaw My Baby We could live so happily The envy of them all But that'll never happen Cause you've got one fatal flaw Oh, Yeah And all my friends, they look at us Say "he won't bend when he could just live happily ever after" It's not that I'm afraid of it But every time you force a fit There's crying instead of laughter So why you gotta be such a lyin'azzz **muvverphuccer**? So why you gotta be such a lyin'azzz, lyin'azzz, lyin'azzz **muvverphuccer**? And you sure had me fooled You really sent me back to school And you made me feel like a royal tool Still I can't help having a soft spot for you My Baby If we put it down on paper And we're careful how we draw It looks perfect But it's got one fatal flaw And you may overlook the obvious Pretend you know it all You refuse to see it But it's got one fatal flaw My Baby You could be my everything You almost have it all You'd be perfect But you've got one fatal flaw My Baby We could live so happily The envy of them all But that'll never happen Cause you've got one fatal flaw My Baby So why you gotta be such a lyin'azzz **muvverphuccir**? So why you gotta be such a lyin'azzz, lyin'azzz, lyin'azzz **muvverphuccer**? (Message edited by second_wind on March 11, 2011) "In the end, only kindness matters."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW2LhQrxqlM It’s only human to despise the weak It’s only human to despise yourself when you’re weak I don’t know why, but that’s the way that it’s always been And I play by the rules I don’t understand at all It’s only human to be lazy and vain It’s only human to expect a world that’s just as vain I don’t know why I want to believe that it’s not that way But I’m johnny come lately, it’s not my place to say (There’s no escape, tell me why do you try so hard?) And I pretend that I’m invincible, that I can go it all alone But I’m only human, trying to get by And praying to heaven I might find out why am I human, mere flesh and blood Afraid to go on without someone to hold me up It’s just a human thing to fear the unknown But isn’t it a tragic thing to live and die alone? Oh lord, look at the world! Have you ever seen so much misery? Like a ghost ship of fools, lost and floating out to sea (There is no escape tell me why do they try so hard?) And they climb and they fall Yet they struggle on the same fault But they’re only human, trying to get by And praying to heaven they might find out Why are we human, mere flesh and blood We’re afraid to go on without someone to hold us up (Message edited by second_wind on March 11, 2011) "In the end, only kindness matters."

To my Mother, who is gone too soon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ks9zyo_Vh4 The one that showed me kindness Was the one that taught me kindness Though I did not recognize it Still I might have died without it And when I awakened It was too late to thank her If I live someday I'll make repayment And show someone the kindness she showed me When my voice grows strident When I feel important I'm reminded of that kindness And where I'd be without it I'm learning my lesson It may take me a lifetime Give me strength to justify my being And show someone the kindness shown to me "In the end, only kindness matters."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILeuZcTrYgI Healing, Part 1 Listen Listen Listen to the voice the voice is an illusion Listen to the voice Don't let the words confuse you 'Cause you need something to concentrate on Concentrate on me You need something to meditate on Meditate on me Listen Listen Listen to your heart Tune into the rhythm Listen to your heart Beating with precision Like the waves upon the seaside It goes on and on Like the spinning of the world It goes on and on Listen Listen Listen for the sound That is not in the music Only you can hear it Only you can use it It's the sound of someone breathing It's the breath of life It's the sound that you are weaving With the thread of life Listen Listen Listen to the sound Let nothing disturb you You are in a place Where nothing can hurt you If you feel a strange sensation It can do no harm Like the spiral of creation It will soon move on "In the end, only kindness matters."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILhBmiXKb_w Healing, Part 2 Where you are going You cannot take your body You are on a journey The baggage is too heavy You can leave your legs behind you You will learn to fly You can leave your arms behind you You will touch the sky You can leave your head behind you You are thought itself You can leave the rest behind you You are breath itself Now you are naked There's no one here to judge you See the clear light Shining high above you Though you're floating in the silence You are not alone For the power of your being Keeps you flowing on Look upon yourself Only with compassion Strip away the shell Hiding your perfection Though your past was full of darkness Now the past is gone And your life is starting over It has just begun Now you are home Don't you recognize it? Towering eternal Behind the troubled thoughts that hide it Though at times it seems so distant It is always there When you need its peace and power You will know it's here "In the end, only kindness matters."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlG6_Ai2dKo Healing, Part 3 Listen Listen Listen to the cry Of a world that's calling to you Listen to the cry Of the helpless souls that need you Though you may have trepidation You can not refuse You will find your own salvation In the path you choose Listen Listen Listen to the voice That whispers in the silence Listen as the voice Solidifies your self reliance Let the peace that you've discovered Be a guiding light Let the power that you've uncovered Set the world aright You could not be closer to your maker Never more or less alone If you know thyself There's nothing else to know You are whole You are whole (Message edited by second_wind on March 11, 2011) "In the end, only kindness matters."

A not-so-oldie, perfect for the moment...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyyThCOE9qk&feature=related I remember when I remember, I remember when I lost my mind There was something so pleasant about that place Even your emotions had an echo In so much space And when you're out there Without care, Yeah, I was out of touch But it wasn't because I didn't know enough I just knew too much Does that make me crazy? Does that make me crazy? Does that make me crazy? Probably And I hope that you are having the time of your life But think twice, that's my only advice Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you Who do you think you are? Ha ha ha! Bless your soul You really think you're in control? Well, I think you're crazy I think you're crazy I think you're crazy Just like me My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb And all I remember is thinking, I want to be like them Ever since I was little Ever since I was little, it looked like fun And it's no coincidence I've come And I can die when I'm done Maybe I'm crazy Maybe you're crazy Maybe we're crazy Probably "In the end, only kindness matters."

Flux, Can't believe you posted John Fred..I loved his music...thought folks had forgotten about him. He died in New Orleans few months before Katrina hit...least he didn't have to witness that. Thank you so much for bringing his music to light. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Biu95fyvmLI I must create a system, or be enslaved by another man's. ~William Blake

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5VQwbcoAR4 "I wanna see your number one lowest common denominator! You're so hot! What you got?" I'll not post all the lyrics to this one....... Besides, he changes them up in performances. This version is WAY better than the original studio version! It's his homage to Jimi Hendrix! "In the end, only kindness matters."

WOW! I really love that cover of "Oh, Well"!!! It's not very often I like a cover as well as the original. The more southern rock sound makes it unique. I can sure hear the Skynard, and .38 Special influences!! I did not remember them, but I just read the bio about them, and I was really fascinated! I missed a lot of rock radio, starting in 1980! "In the end, only kindness matters."
