Mama, how do you do that? "Smile" is one of my favorite songs from my childhood, as this is another song my father use to sing to me while rocking me to sleep. I think you have a very special gift. |

Great memories to be had here! The music scene in these parts is fantastic. Leon Russell plays in a club two blocks from here a few times a year--he'll be there shortly. From Somewhere over the Rainbow to Song for You to Stranger in a Strange Land To Delta Lady and then to Delta Lady by Joe Cocker and then to this lol: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSxzEy-m9KY I love the Shelter People background vocals passionately (Message edited by cheaven on August 29, 2010) |

Here are three uplifting, soul-stirring songs – the trio, simpatico in their resembling succulency. Please take a meditative listen to them. They are sure to brighten up your days as they do mine. “Serra Pelada” Minimalist pianist/composer, Philip Glass, scored the music for each of Godfrey Reggio's cinematic think pieces, beginning with the 1983 masterpiece, Koyaanisqatsi. Here is one of the highlights off the CD to the follow-up 1988 film, Powaqqatsi: Life In Transformation. (The titles are Hopi terms. Koyaanisqatsi, for those who don't know, means “life out of balance.”) The first track off this soundtrack is extremely positive – gung-ho, upbeat. The gaga children's choir that chimes in is felicitating in its vivacious tra-la-laing. We are told to “Have joy.” This bouncy recording is most joyful! Enjoy! Running time: 5:02. http://www.amazon.com/Powaqqatsi-1988-Film-Philip-Glass/dp/B000005IZ8/ref=sr_1_1 ?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1283186580&sr=1-1 “Sangre De Cristo” Ex-Grateful Dead drummer, Mickey Hart, is one of the planet's most talented percussionists. Upon his reviving, Hart went his own way and pursued a musical career in ethnic fusion. I'm no fan of the Grateful Dead, but Hart's solo work – on such releases as At The Edge and Planet Drum – makes for mind-expanding and exotically transporting listening. At The Edge, in particularly, conjures up images of floating down murky jungle waters on a raft or in a tugboat. Mystery Box, unlike the others, is non-instrumental and not as impressive, what with its – overall – pop-flavored lyrics. That said, one of the most touching of Mickey Hart songs is found on the CD: “Sangre De Cristo” – the album's capstone. This glorious paean, with words by Robert Hunter, is led by lead singer Mint Juleps' ardent and soulful vocals, accompanied by equally moving harmonization. It's an ode to “That great red mountain chain / Send down your waters / Cure the pain / Sangre de Cristo / Bring down the rain.” This exquisite, affecting melody is goose-fleshingly beautiful in its simplicity and heart-felt delivery, in praise of one of Mother Earth's awe-inspiring creations and the healing properties it contains. For me, the song is evocative of a bevy of young women, gathered at the base of a mountain, drinking in the marvel before them, simultaneously expressing reverence with arms extended while at the same time basking in the freshness of a warm cascade or hot spring. Running time: 4:14. http://www.amazon.com/Mickey-Harts-Mystery-Box-Reis/dp/B0015I2O5U/ref=sr_1_9?ie= UTF8&s=music&qid=1283186623&sr=1-9 “Scene At The Crossroads” German keyboardist, Christopher Franke, formerly of Tangerine Dream, is a master at sequencer-driven progressive electronica. Yet in 1996 Franke released The Celestine Prophecy: A Musical Voyage, an album that displayed the synthesizer-wizard's less night-hawkish, more radiant side. Indeed, A Musical Voyage, based on James Redfield's influential book, is a magical and mystical journey unlike any other. Said to be based on an ancient manuscript discovered in the rain forests of Peru, Redfield's narrative (as told in the booklet that comes with the CD) tells of one man's spiritual awakening as he progresses through “9 key insights into life,” a navigational aid that ultimately helps the seeker attain wisdom, an awareness of intuition and synchronicity, a “divine connection,” and a glimpse into the hereafter realm, all the while traversing through visionary landscapes, along garden alleys and tropical vistas, though occasionally and inevitably meeting up with stumbling blocks – like Robert Jensen, described as an “energy thief.” The pan flute, marimba, didgeridoo, shakuhachi, Celtic harp, and Gregorian chant are all featured on this CD. My two favorite of the storybook-like musical vignettes are “A Radiant Band Of Light,” a euphonious composition containing a mid-way-through transition which I find enchanting, and this one. The illustriously sung “Scene At The Crossroads,” is a cheerful, empyreal, catchy sing-along that tells of the protagonist's having chosen the right path amidst his quest. It is a time for celebration. The Taiwanese caroling and clapping here are absolutely delightful. What an inspirational and euphoric vocal this is! Running time: 4:12. http://www.amazon.com/James-Redfields-Celestine-Prophecy-Musical/dp/B000003ACR/r ef=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1283186675&sr=1-5 (Message edited by foundgoat on August 31, 2010) |

Just the other day, I was reminiscing about the art film "Koyaanisqatsi -- Life out of balance." And here you mention it too! I was thinking how prophetic it was with the time-lapse photography used in the film. The images were great, the music outstanding, though intense. This is exactly how time feel today.... swoosh! Too many people enjoy the comfort of opinion without struggling through the labor of thought. JFK

Mama, just watched the secret garden song and how beautiful! I was in a beautiful meadow surrounded by flower gardens yesterday, watching my dear, sweet daughter April get married to her soul mate Ricky. It was such a wonderful experience and place, much like the song and video. Thank you for posting Greenwaves, perfect timing! |

As the saying goes, there's music for all occasions. Name some albums that you listen to while meditating or that help you to meditate. Here are some of mine: Brainscapes: Brainscapes (1996) Peter Davison: Adagio: Music For Relaxation (1997) Jon Anderson: Angels Embrace (1995) Karunesh: Zen Breakfast (2001) Favorite track: “Returning To Now” Liquid Mind: Balance 3 (1999) Popul Vuh: Tantric Songs (1991) Specifically: “Angels Of The Air Part 2” “Brothers Of Darkness – Sons Of Light” “Blessing” Tony Scott: Music For Zen Meditation (1965) re-released (1997) and David Sun: Tranquility (1984) ... Karunesh's Nirvana Cafe (2002), although not listened to while meditating, is also very good. My favorite track is the ender: “The Peace Within.” I knew somebody who used this song, incorporating it as background music for a family-photo video she'd made for her parents, which she said made everyone tear up. |

Mama Shine, did you know that Johnny Rivers is from Baton Rouge? I grew up a little north of there, and one of my English teachers from High School used to teach him in BR. Also, Jimmy Buffet is from Woodlawn, a little suburb, east of BR. He used to date a friend of mine. |

man in, Yes to both questions. Johnny changed his name to Rivers for the Mississippi...think he was born in NY and moved south at an early age. I thought Jimmy was born in Pascagoula..I knew his friend from Mobile and thats how I know Jimmy. I haven't seen him in ages....My daughter went to school in Hattisburg and Jimmy was an alumni of that college. He has a place here in NO...guess it's still here. I have a feeling I may have met Johnny Rivers...but periods in my life are fuzzy.

Buddie: I love Townes Van Zandt. His album For The Sake Of The Song I play over and over and over. My favorite songs of his are off this CD: the bittersweet "Tecumseh Valley," the bluesy cool "Waitin' Around To Die," (my all-time favorite of his) and the amusing "Talkin' Karate Blues." Have you seen the movie that came out in 2004, Be Here To Love Me? Man In: Thanks for the hearty welcome back. I'm with you, Micky Hart rocks! I wish I could have been at that concert. |

Thank you brother FG for some reason I had never heard of him except he opened for a group I followed .. When I saw his name I thought who the heck is this Dutch Guy.. That was some ? years ago.. One day searching around music I played someone else doing Tecumseh Valley..I thought Emmy was the only one .. OMG To answer your question .. Yes I have Be here to Love Me and Heartworn Highway.. Because its such a great Video and not just about Townes.. I'm only missing Live in Amaterdam.. Got the Books To Live is to Fly And A Deeper Blue and a few Tshirts I feel in love with him and his music but then more research told me he was dead Wait'en round to die was the 1st song he ever wrote.. But I LOVE this one..Shows his devotion Finally.. Townes (Message edited by buddie on September 02, 2010) |

I used to have the sheet music for this song and always thought the piano had a classical feel to it. I can't remember how to play it so I keep listening to this version... shut my eyes cause the video is distracting. The lyrics are nice but I find the melody so lovely, think I've almost got it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fG8JxpitqOM I must create a system, or be enslaved by another man's. ~William Blake

flux, If you listen to the lyrics, a few times over, you'll notice that the lyrics don't say much. It's very elusive. I always listened to the video has the Rorschach Inkblot Images going-in-and-out. That video and the lyrics are nothing but what the listener interprets the song to mean. I always enjoyed the song..relaxed me...lol, then again, I'm..errrr... I must create a system, or be enslaved by another man's. ~William Blake

Buddie, sorry it has taken time to get back with to you. I knew he was a songwriter, because of "Pancho and Lefty" that Willie and Merle recorded, but that's about it. I listened to a couple of his songs on You Tube, his style is what I would classify as 1940's and 50's country music. Which led me to look into his background. His songs remind me of Hank Williams (who he acknowledged was one of his influences) and I find it interesting that he died on the same day 44 years later that Hank died. God give me the grace to accept the things that I cannot change. And grant unto me the power to change the things that I cannot accept.

Victoria: Have you also seen Baraka (with music by Dead Can Dance) and Chronos (with music by Michael Stearns). Two excellent pictures right up there with Koyaanisqatsi! (Message edited by foundgoat on September 04, 2010) |
