Wow MM, I remember that song. As a kid I used to sing along with it, not knowing the lyrics at all. Now I find it's a very sad tune about lost love, when back then I thought it was an uplifting positive message. |

I heard that beautiful song for the first time in I don't know when, listening to C2C last night. Now, looking at the the youtube post of the song by MM, is the first time I remember seeing an English translation of the lyrics. I do know that I can remember loving the song very much as a kid, and knowing, on an emotional, and even physical, level, that it was a SAD song. There is a very sad, crying quality to the singer's delivery of the song. Love it! It brings back great memories. And.......Mama, I have posted that video of "The Lorax" with Cat Stevens' song, at least once, here on this thread. That film was so touching and beautiful! I remember it well when it first came out. My son was only a few months old when it came out on TV the first time. I still love it, as I do all of Dr. Suess. And from the wonderful creator of another Classic animated piece, from the year before, which was entitled "The Point"...... But, rather than post songs or passages from "The Point" (I mean, what would be the point?)..... Instead, I'll post one of my favorite songs from the amazing Harry Nillson, MHRIP: The Moonbeam Song Such precious memories...... "In the end, only kindness matters."

WOW....such good songs, and the resulting free-association of memories.....!!!!! Flux, I never understood why "Remember" did not chart better. Nillson was such an amazing talent, all the way around. He also had quite a triagic story, though, although not as tragic as his buddy, John Lennon. I have worn out TWO copies of "Nillson Schmillson" on LP, and also have it on both cassette and CD. ---------- Mama, I just LOVE Van's version of "Motherless Child". But, I love everything he does! and......YEAH....Steely Dan and frying brains on LSD......wow! They are in my Top Ten. Again, I have worn out THREE copies of "Aja" on LP, one of which was a "Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs Half-Speed Master Recording"!!!!! (I have 6 different LPs in that format!) I've worn out TWO copies of "Gaucho" on LP, but have it on both cassette and CD. And I LOVE the "Two Against Nature" album, especially "Cousin Dupree" and "Gaslighting Abbie"; but the whole album is excellent! God, I love the Dan's gritty, sarcastic, sometimes sleazy and often devastatingly poignant lyrics, and as musicians, and songwriters, they are just geniuses. And, after segueing from LSD and Steely Dan, right to Chicago "25 or 6 to 4", which is another one of those juicy songs that has "plausible deniability"! Oh, and my goodness...."Memory" is one of those (countless many) songs that I find myself crying almost as soon as it begins. OK.....here goes......... And now, for something completely different! (you have to press the play button to the left of the song title. The sound quality is really good, compared to what I could find on youtube.....) ...I may not be normal, but nobody is.... I know I've done weird things Told people I "heared" things When Silence was all that abounds Been days when it pleased me To be on my knees Following ants as they crawl across the ground Been insane on a train But I'm still me again And the place where I hold you is true So I know I'm alright Cause I'd have to be crazy To fall out of love with you (Message edited by second_wind on July 30, 2010) "In the end, only kindness matters."

Just feel like saying that I'm here but not "all here". I find the atmosphere around the board is a bit oppressive. Conflict may be a turn on for some people and if so that's okay..it brings me down. Yes, it's addicting! There is just so much to see and hear! I am constantly amazed at what is out there on youtube, that feeds our souls in so many ways! And now, Mama, you made me get up and go put on my "Raising Sand" cd! What an absolutely brilliant work that whole album is! One of life's greatest gifts is the experience of being brought to tears, and have goosebumps and chills up and down my body, in response to a piece of music. The only thing even more magical than the experience of utter joy that music can bring, is to be able to share that experience with another person, or people, who also "get/s it", and feel just as profoundly moved as I/you do. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE_J8BUP5Sc&feature=related "In the end, only kindness matters."

Mama, part of the melody in "Why Worry" is from some classical piece of music. Do you recognize it, and do you know what it's from? It's driving me nuts! What an amazingly beautiful song! I found this version that is also amazing: Mark & Emmylou It was also VERY interesting to learn (thanks to you, flux!!) of the covers done of this beautiful Knopfler song! I love this thread! SW, Just came in to turn the 'puter off before I lay me down to sleep. Now that you mention it, I do somehow hear a familiar tune but can't place it. Like a lullaby or a familiar refrain from a childhood memory. I don't want to over think it because the song is too beautiful to agonize over. Although, if I do come up with something, I'll let you know. Have a good morning. I must create a system, or be enslaved by another man's. ~William Blake

Well, I could be wrong, but I don't think it is a lullabye, but I do think it is a well-known classical piece. I think it might be a piece done for "chamber music" style of classical music. I hear violins and cellos....in fact, it seems as though it is a piece of music either for a soloist or a duet........I don't know. And, you are right....overthinking is not a good idea. But, because you seem to be so much more educated about classical music than I am, I was hoping you would know. No worries. I need to educate myself more. I love classical music, but I am not educated about it, like I am about popular music, especially classic rock. There are only a handful of classical pieces that I would be able to name when I hear them. It's all about exposure, though.....so, I need to expose myself to it more. Once again, this thread leads to learning and joy! In my quest to find the piece of music I am referring to, I will end up listening to many selections in the process! I mean, just look what I discovered in just the first three choices in my search! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g-uf81SUko&feature=related I don't know what film the first section is from, but if you wait or fast forward to 1:22, the song begins, skated to by my all-time favorite ice dancing pair! ****claps hands in joy**** You, too, have a blessed day! "In the end, only kindness matters."

Lordie, now I'm even off into looking into tempos and time signatures, trying to find pieces of music done in the same time signature and tempo as the one I am trying to identify! As near as I can tell, the piece is in 4/4 time, in Largo tempo, and possibly even tempo giusto, "the average rate of the human heart"; although the tempo of the piece I'm looking for might even be a bit slower than that. Anyway, this is all very interesting. I really struggled with music theory in high school choir, and just barely learned to read music. But I was interested, and really wanted to learn, and I had an amazing choir teacher who spent many hours with me over 3 school years, trying to help me with music theory. Like I always say.....lessons come from unexpected places, and WHEN you least expect them! "In the end, only kindness matters."

In the Knopfler piece above, it is the series of seven notes, in particular (which he first plays at :21), that have me on a mission to discover what it reminds me of. (Of course, those same notes are sung in the lyric portion of the song.) I finally found the piece of music that I kept hearing, that has a very similar, but not exact, series of 7 notes. Here is that piece. The "seven notes" are first played at :10 in the vid: Bach, J.S. - "Air" Orchestral Suite N°3 in D Major BWV 1068 Now I see why memories of choir, and trying to learn music theory, and my patient choir teacher, were coming back to me!!!! Oh, the young, eager voices of a high school choir!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cklJVW5_Yl0&feature=related And then, there's Ensemble Planeta's version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eN9kiyIv-Q Amazing! ....and, even more memories from my childhood and youth, regarding this piece of music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xPUqurEwx8&feature=related I remember also hearing the Vienna Boys Choir do this piece. And, Mama, upon further research, I see that, yes, this song appears on many "classical albums for children" albums, and I understand why! How about this one, where a crying baby gives the choir a cue to begin, as well as a coo of joy about halfway through the performance! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c7Hxn1pdTU&feature=related Of course, it is also used in weddings, almost as often as Pachelbel's Canon! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOA-2hl1Vbc&feature=related (Message edited by second_wind on August 04, 2010) "In the end, only kindness matters."

SW, That air always brings tears to my eyes, I listen to or play Bach on piano almost everyday. You have a sensitive ear. I post air on a G string so much when I'm musing late at night in the Pond. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZXM2eq46_s Now listen to A Whiter Shade of Pale. I know this version isn't the original but I like Annie. Notice the similarity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqfTioTvNcQ&feature=related I must create a system, or be enslaved by another man's. ~William Blake
