man, Started not to turn on the 'puter but I'm glad I did. You have posted a fine selection of songs and coincidently they all spoke to me. I prefer Stings version of Elton's song and the video had many images that I had pictures of that Katrina washed away..I'm a bit Fey, lol I wish I had the piano sheet music to that song..it is beautiful. All the selections are perfect..uplifting and just what I needed, I consider you a Friend and even though I don't know your name I'll just have to make one up...lol Merci I must create a system, or be enslaved by another man's. ~William Blake

There was something about the tune or tone of the song "Everybodys Been Burned" that reminds me of this song. "why I chose that as my theme song as a youngun'." Wow, Mama....despite certain "appearances", we have that in common. I felt the same way about that song, only my version was Bobby Darin's. I know I have said that before. Man in.....you are killing me with Cockburn! That last one.....OMG. Thank the Universe that there will ALWAYS be music to discover, both old and new. It is one of the primary reasons for living, in my opinion. "In the end, only kindness matters."

You're welcome Second Wind. Bruce has been around playing for over 40 years. I finally saw him perform at Cat's Cradle near Chapel Hill a couple of years back. And, yes, he is a master guitar player. MS, I love the Knopler/Atkins collaboration. I need to get that CD. I posting another from batch here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIKt_WQHia8&feature=related Some Changes Made, by Jimmy Driftwood (I think). I was fortunate to see Chet Atkins in concert in Boone, NC a few summers back. Doc Watson came out and played with him for a while. The highlight of the show was when Chet played There'll be some Changes made in electric guitar format. Amazing, one of the best rock and roll guitar solos I've ever heard. I wish someone had a recording of it. |

Years ago Country Joe McDonald recorded an album using the poetry of WWI veteran and poet Robert Service. It's called War, War, War. One of my favorite songs on that album is The Man from Abphabaska. I can't believe I found it on You Tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_QpLJaKDCI&feature=related |

man, Did I ever tell you my 2 oldest Son's live in Asheville and my Cousin lives in Flat Rock. I have spent so much time in N.C. Went to summer camp as a teen in Black Mt. I always said if I ever leave New Orleans that may be where I'll go. That song The Return really got to me. I swear if i just heard the music I would have thought Leonard Cohen ( he is one of my faves). This group is very talented. I enjoy Robert Service as well. Beneath A Phrygian Sky Music and lyric: Loreena McKennitt The moonlight it was dancing On the waves, out on the sea The stars of heaven hovered In a shimmering galaxy A voice from down the ages So in haunting in its song These ancient stones will tell us Our love must make us strong The breeze it wrapped around me As I stood there on the shore And listened to this voice Like I never heard before Our battles they may find us No choice may ours to be But hold the banner proudly The truth will set us free My mind was called across the years Of rages and of strife Of all the human misery And all the waste of life We wondered where our God was In the face of so much pain I looked up to the stars above To find you once again We travelled the wide oceans Heard many call your name With sword and gun and hatred It all seemed much the same Some used your name for glory Some used it for their gain Yet when liberty lay wanting No lives were lost in vain Is it not our place to wonder As the sky does weep with tears And all the living creatures Look on with mortal fear It is ours to hold the banner Is ours to hold it long It is ours to carry forward Our love must make us strong And as the warm wind carried Its song into the night I closed my eyes and tarried Until the morning light As the last star it shimmered And the new sun's day gave birth It was in this magic moment Came this prayer for mother earth Reprise: The moonlight it was dancing On the waves, out on the sea The stars of heaven hovered In a shimmering galaxy A voice from down the ages So in haunting in its song The ancient stones will tell us Our love must make us strong. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeyGLF8d9_8 I must create a system, or be enslaved by another man's. ~William Blake

that's the song on Ancient Muse that really grabbed me. MS, are you familiar with Black Mountain School? It was an avant garde multi-diciplinary art school that was the place to be in the 40's and 50's. Let me know if you ever get up here. Perhaps I could visit you in Asheville. Also, my brother lives in NO. No plans to go back there for the present, it's hot enough up here. |

I have loved all of Gershwin's music since I was a little kid, and my father sat me down in front of the stereo to listen to "Rhapsody in Blue". Here is the best version of it on youtube, IMO!! Rhapsody in Blue set to images from the streets of New York City/Manhattan. This is the complete, unabridged, LONG version of this piece, almost 17 minutes long. I discovered this quite by accident a couple of years ago. This guy has done some amazing videos to music. One of the last really good times I had with my Father, was in about 1997. I flew to visit them, and he and I took a day road trip to Sedona. I rented a Lincoln Towne Car with a killer stereo, and took along some great music that he and I enjoy in common. This piece was among them. He and I both know the piece so well that we were both "conducting" it as we were going down the highway; me with one arm, him with both arms. It was a peak experience! This song can still bring me goosebumps and tears! Wishing you all a Happy Independence Day, 2 days early! "In the end, only kindness matters."

In a world of acoustic pandemonium, where does one escape? Soothing, peaceful music helps. The following is a review of mine highlighting one compilation album which I play quite frequently when feeling in need of a psychical pick-me-up, a refreshment, a needing of an aural oasis from the madness outside. If you love frilly piano pieces and hypnotic musical tranquilizers, then give this album a listen. It has been a healing force for me for many years now. Tranquility: A Real Music Sampler (1997) ***** I'm no New Age nut, lifestyle wise, but I've always been a New Age music lover at heart, even long before I first discovered the genre, in the early Nineties, via Vangelis (my favorite musical artist). I own an extensive and eclectic collection of music that covers many musical styles and spans many decades, reaching back to 1930s' clarinet swing (a la Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey), up through early blues (Mississippi John Hurt), bluegrass (Bill Monroe), dixieland/early r+b/scat (Louis Prima), through to 1950s' doo wop, and '50s' pop (I exercise to Bobby Darin), to '60s' bossa nova (Astrud Gilberto) and lounge, and '80s' alternative pop-rock (Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Talking Heads, Yello). But throughout all these eras the songs which I've most enjoyed from these artists and bands have been the sedative over the stimulant tracks (like Yello's "Homer Hossa" off their Claro Que Si album). Thus, why I cherish New Age music as much as I do. The music is like a 'best of' of all these aforementioned eras, genres, and musicians, being most New Age artists share and display the same diverse influences in their music. One of my favorite quotes in regard to music, comes from Robert Jourdain's book Music, The Brain, And Ecstasy, in which he cogently expresses the so true observation, of how, "In modern industrial societies, music is everywhere and embedded in everything. We wake to music on our clock radios, then use it to gather energy over breakfast, to pacify ourselves through rush hour, to anesthetize ourselves through work, and to relax at day's end. And we are bombarded by uninvited music. An hour's television viewing is accompanied by dozens of tunes designed to draw adrenaline or tears or consumer dollars. Music has been used to make factory workers produce more widgets and to make chickens lay more eggs. We dance to music, shop to music, clean house to music, exercise to music, make love to music. Yet occasionally do we sit down and intently listen to music." Music, at least here in the hectic and distraction-oriented West, is omnipresent and, by extension, very often taken for granted and not really listened to. It is why New Age is my favorite genre, and why this compilation CD is a New Age classic and collectible: It is the first and foremost style of music designed that it be listened to. It requires of this on the part of the listener. Like the label says, these samples truly represent Real Music. And it may in fact be the only kind of music where even the best of adjectives don't come close to doing it justice, to describing what the music does for the listener – the peaceful images it evokes in the mind, the healing effect upon the soul. This album, like the genre it represents, is so aurally and visually beautiful, the ineffable and immortal quality of its sound is beyond being put into words. What other type of music out there transports the listener into the realm of one's imagination? I can't think of too many. (The very antithesis of New Age may be Country-Pop, which is literal, extroverted, earthly.) Take just the imaginary places that this collection of songs take you. Tranquility is a very sunny, azure and verdant album, from start to finish, and as airy as dandelion fuzz blowing in the breeze, as the cover art illustrates. The husband and wife team of Randy and Pamela Copus, better known as 2002, open the album with "Land Of Forever," an inviting piano piece that immediately sets the tone for the tracks that follow. According to their on-line profile, "Both musicians provide all of the vocals on their albums, recording their voices many, many times and layering them in their state of the art studio in Texas to create a 'virtual' choir with a celestial, angelic quality." Randy plays piano, electric cellos, guitar, bass and keyboards; his wife, Pamela, flutes and harp. If you're not calmed by the end of (similar-sounding) track 2, Kevin Kern's "Fairy Wings," you may require a prescription drug to do what this music does naturally for most. New Age may also not be your cup of tea, either. Personally, I enjoy this album over a cup of Earl Grey or peppermint tea, around dusk, sprawled out in hot bathwater, with my eyes closed. They're all good, but my three favorite tracks on the album are by Hilary Stagg, Gary Remal Malkin, and Govi. Malkin was born and raised in New York, and has formal training, having studied piano and composition at a conservatory. He began work as a solo artist in the early 1990s and has composed music for film and television, and more than 1000 television commercials. His "Appalachian Sunrise," is, like its title evokes, a gorgeous aubade. Where does this song take me to? To early morning, right before sunrise, leisurely strolling through a maturely treed golf course, putting in a relaxing game of nine holes, at the crack of dawn. I must be dreaming for there's no other golfers around. You can practically smell the scent of dew, and feel the crispness of the autumn air. German-born Govi, spent eight years living in India. "It was there that Govi started playing the mandolin, mandola cello, sitar, bouzouki, charango and the 8-string ukulele," notes his Real Music Artist bio. (He currently lives in Hawaii.) With his "Go Easy," the 12th track on Tranquility, you're at the beach, on a beautiful clear sunny day, basking in Govi's wistful and balmy guitar playing. Hilary Stagg, the wonderful harpist, died too young, in June of 1999 at the age of 42. His background was quite interesting. Quoting from Wikipedia, Stagg "was an electrician when in his mid-twenties he attended an Andreas Vollenweider concert. He was enthralled, and so inspired that he purchased a small harp. He tried formal lessons but quickly decided he would learn to play the harp a different way. Hilary practiced lucid dreaming and developed a way of dancing with the Muse in his dreams, a way of exploring and composing music in his 'sleep' that became the core of his compositions." Stagg's "Reflections Of Love," the third track on Tranquility, is especially dreamy, the epitome of an adult lullaby. When those celestial-sounding female background voices chime in, it's so heavenly, it's as if you're adrift, being taken away on a pillowy cloud. I am appreciative of all the composers that contributed to this compilation. Out of the countless albums which make up my music library, this is one that gets played the most. Tranquility: A Real Music Sampler is an album I treasure. |
