With the talk of comets and space dust and other things around here, I'm thinking about the old Carpenters song - "Close To You" - Why do birds suddenly appear Every time you are near? Just like me, they long to be Close to you Why do stars fall down from the sky Every time you walk by? Just like me, they long to be Close to you On the day that you were born The angels got together And decided to create a dream come true So they sprinkled moon-dust In your hair of gold And starlight in your eyes of blue That is why all the girls in town Follow you all around Just like me, they long to be Close to you [break] On the day that you were born The angels got together And decided to create a dream come true So they sprinkled moon-dust In your hair of gold And starlight in your eyes of blue That is why all the girls in town Follow you all around Just like me, they long to be Close to you Just like me, they long to be Close to you (Ah, aahh, aahh) Close to you (Ah, aahh, aahh) Close to you (Ah, aahh, aahh) Close to you (Ah, aahh, aahh) Close to you |

One more Carpenter Song, Lyrics this time The Great Musician can play a melody on your heart strings, that is far more beautiful than any you've ever heard with your natural ear. With great fruition, He'll fill your soul with His sweet love divine. You will sing and dance and shout and tell the world about this Savior so dear. For Susi by Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver - "I'll Be With You" - ...Far across these high mountains where the wild geese do fly and upon one of them someday is where I shall die. There my soul will leave my body like a hawk on the wing I'll never see your smile again or listen to you sing... But I'll be with you when the sun shall rise I'll smile again on you my friend... Now believe me when I tell you when the wind sighs and moans across these high mountains that you are walking on ancient words that were spoken are there for us to see I hope they make you smile again like daylight through the leaves... But I'll be with you when the sun shall rise, I'll smile again on you my friend. But I'll be with you when the sun shall rise I'll smile again on you my friend. |

The Woman In Me (Needs The Man In You) I'm not always strong And sometimes I'm even wrong But I win when I choose And I can't stand to lose But I can't always be } The rock that you see When the nights get too long And I just can't go on The woman in me Needs you to be The man in my arms To hold tenderly Cause I'm a woman in love And it's you I run to Yeah the woman in me Needs the man in you When the world wants too much And it feels cold and out of touch It's a beautiful place When you kiss my face The woman in me Needs you to be The man in my arms To hold tenderly Cause I'm a woman in love And it's you I run to Yeah the woman in me Needs the man in you Yeah the woman in me Needs the man in you I need you baby Yeah yeah Oh baby... Eye, Thank you ..Eye in the Sky is one of my all time favorite songs. This guy Humphries that sings and plays "Sorry don't mean nothing".this song is so good. I just want to keep it. I was in an angry mood and this music calmed me down. I must create a system, or be enslaved by another man's. ~William Blake

Rogers and Hart wrote a song back in the 1930's called "My Funny Valentine". For years, I thought it was a really dorky, overly-sentimental song. Then, one day I bought a CD of Ella Fitzgerald's recordings and this song took on a whole new meaning. Her voice turns it into a very poignant love song. Behold the way our fine feathered friend, His virtue doth parade Thou knowest not, my dim-witted friend The picture thou hast made Thy vacant brow, and thy tousled hair Conceal thy good intent Thou noble upright truthful sincere, And slightly dopey gent You're my funny valentine, Sweet comic valentine, You make me smile with my heart. Your looks are laughable, un-photographable, Yet, you're my favorite work of art. Is your figure less than Greek? Is your mouth a little weak? When you open it to speak, are you smart? But, don't change a hair for me. Not if you care for me. Stay little valentine, stay! Each day is Valentine's Day Is your figure less than Greek? Is your mouth a little weak? When you open it to speak, are you smart? But, don't change a hair for me. Not if you care for me. Stay little valentine, stay! Each day is Valentine's Day |

Star, This is my day for songs. I love this and its one of my tunes I get real emotional with when I play it on piano. By the time I sing "stay little valentine stay" I get a lump in my throat and the tears flow....weird about that song. I must create a system, or be enslaved by another man's. ~William Blake

"My Funny Valentine" gets to the heart of it all---loving someone's very spirit without regard for packaging and totally accepting them as they are. It is about how we all wish to love, and be loved in returned; and Mama I also get a lump in my throat every time I hear it. |

"Circle of Life" Elton John From the day we arrive on the planet And blinking, step into the sun There's more to be seen than can ever be seen More to do than can ever be done Some say eat or be eaten Some say live and let live But all are agreed as they join the stampede You should never take more than you give (Chorus) In the Circle of Life It's the wheel of fortune It's the leap of faith It's the band of hope Till we find our place On the path unwinding In the Circle, the Circle of Life Some of us fall by the wayside And some of us soar to the stars And some of us sail through our troubles And some have to live with the scars There's far too much to take in here More to find than can ever be found But the sun rolling high Through the sapphire sky Keeps the great and small on the endless round (Chorus repeats) On the path unwinding In the Circle, the Circle of Life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFzoWg80GS4&feature=related |

Elton John - Can You Feel the Love Tonight There's a calm surrender To the rush of day When the heat of the rolling world Can be turned away An enchanted moment And it sees me through It's enough for this restless warrior Just to be with you (Chorus) And can you feel the love tonight? It is where we are It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer That we got this far And can you feel the love tonight How it's laid to rest? It's enough to make kings and vagabonds Believe the very best There's a time for everyone If they only learn That the twisting kaleidoscope Moves us all in turn There's a rhyme and reason To the wild outdoors When the heart of this star-crossed voyager Beats in time with yours (Chorus) And can you feel the love tonight? It is where we are It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer That we got this far And can you feel the love tonight How it's laid to rest? It's enough to make kings and vagabonds Believe the very best It's enough to make kings and vagabonds Believe the very best http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duwz5y4jONE&feature=related |

Im still young, but I know my days are numbered 1234567 and so on But a time will come when these numbers have all ended And all Ive ever seen will be forgotten Wont you come To my funeral when my days are done Lifes not long And so I hope when I am finally dead and gone That youll gather round when I am lowered into the ground When my coffin is sealed and Im safely 6 feet under Perhaps my friends will see fit then to judge me Oh when they pause to consider all my blunders I hope they wont be too quick to begrudge me Wont you come To my funeral when my days are done Lifes not long And so I hope when I am finally dead and gone That youll gather round when I am lowered into the ground If I should die before I wake up I pray that the lord my soul will take but My body, my body - thats your job Well I cant be sure where Im headed after death To heaven, hell, or beyond to that great vast But if I can I would like to meet my maker Theres one or two things Id sure like to ask Wont you come To my funeral when my days are done Lifes not long And so I hope when I am finally dead and gone That youll gather round when I am lowered into the ground --At My Funeral by Crash Test Dummies I can't dislike you, but I will say this to you. You haven't got long before you are all going to kill yourselves because you are all crazy. Charles Manson

Fortwynt, that song hits on a huge "mark" for me today, while I am struggling with the seeming contradictions of "unconditional love" and "tough love". I will have to go to YouTube and look for a video of this song. "In the end, only kindness matters."

I just read that Dan Fogelberg has died. The Leader of the Band An only child Alone and wild A cabinet makers son His hands were meant For different work And his heart was known To none -- He left his home And went his lone And solitary way And he gave to me A gift I know I never Can repay A quiet man of music Denied a simpler fate He tried to be a soldier once But his music wouldnt wait He earned his love Through discipline A thundering, velvet hand His gentle means of sculpting souls Took me years to understand. The leader of the band is tired And his eyes are growing old But his blood runs through My instrument And his song is in my soul -- My life has been a poor attempt To imitate the man Im just a living legacy To the leader of the band. My brothers lives were Different For they heard another call One went to chicago And the other to st. paul And Im in colorado When Im not in some hotel Living out this life Ive chose And come to know so well. I thank you for the music And your stories of the road I thank you for the freedom When it came my time to go -- I thank you for the kindness And the times when you got tough And, pap, I dont think i Said i love you near enough -- The leader of the band is tired And his eyes are growing old But his blood runs through My instrument And his song is in my soul -- My life has been a poor attempt To imitate the man Im just a living legacy To the leader of the band I am the living legacy To the leader of the band. Here's a video of Dan performing. |

OMG. I am sad, sad, sad to hear of this. I have not had the TV on at all today for the past 24 hours, so I had not heard about it. Dan's music meant so much to me, as it did to so MANY people. I still, to this day, cannot listen to certain of his songs without crying. I was blessed to see him in concert in Phoenix at the Celebrity Theatre, in about 1996 or 1997. It was "luck" (and determination) that I even knew that he was playing while I was there visiting my father, but I will never forget it. It was just him and his guitars and piano. The theatre was small, intimate, "in-the-round", and I sat less than 30 feet from him. Here is my favorite Fogelberg song: Dancing Shoes Rest in peace, Dan. You touched many hearts. "In the end, only kindness matters."

another Dan Fogelberg song. I have this on an old 45. It seems appropriate for this time of year... "Same Old Lang Syne" Met my old lover in the grocery store The snow was falling Christmas Eve I stole behind her in the frozen foods And I touched her on the sleeve She didn't recognize the face at first But then her eyes flew open wide She went to hug me and she spilled her purse And we laughed until we cried. We took her groceries to the checkout stand The food was totalled up and bagged We stood there lost in our embarrassment As the conversation dragged. We went to have ourselves a drink or two But couldn't find an open bar We bought a six-pack at the liquor store And we drank it in her car. We drank a toast to innocence We drank a toast to now And tried to reach beyond the emptiness But neither one knew how. She said she'd married her an architect Who kept her warm and safe and dry She would have liked to say she loved the man But she didn't like to lie. I said the years had been a friend to her And that her eyes were still as blue But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I saw Doubt or gratitude. She said she saw me in the record stores And that I must be doing well I said the audience was heavenly But the traveling was hell. We drank a toast to innocence We drank a toast to now And tried to reach beyond the emptiness But neither one knew how. We drank a toast to innocence We drank a toast to time Reliving in our eloquence Another 'auld lang syne'... The beer was empty and our tongues were tired And running out of things to say She gave a kiss to me as I got out And I watched her drive away. Just for a moment I was back at school And felt that old familiar pain And as I turned to make my way back home The snow turned into rain -- |

Silent Night Theres a pine tree in a window in a house on a hill With a tree top angel sitting perfectly still Shes watching the shoppers walk through the snow With their arms full of treasures and hearts all aglow Chorus: We held hands and stared at the lights on the tree As if christmas was invented for you and for me When the angel on the treetop requested a song We sang silent night all day long Theres a family thats gathered in some living room Dinner on the table thats been cooking since noon Stockings on the mantle are hanging with care While every body is saying a prayer Repeat chorus Theres a room out there somewhere with a woman in a chair With memories of childhood still lingering there. How pretty the paper, the lights and the snow. How precious those memories of long long ago. Repeat chorus When the angel on the treetop requested a song.We sang silent night all day long John Prine We are our infinite

Christmas in Prison It was christmas in prison And the food was real good We had turkey and pistols Carved out of wood And I dream of her always Even when I dont dream Her names on my tongue And her bloods in my stream. Chorus: Wait awhile eternity Old mother natures got nothing on me..Come to me Run to me Come to me, now Were rolling My sweetheart Were flowing By god! She reminds me of a chess game With someone I admire Or a picnic in the rain After a prairie fire Her heart is as big As this whole goddaRn jail And shes sweeter than saccharine At a drug store sale. How Far is Heaven How far is heaven? Let's go tonight, I want my daddy to hold me tight. A little girl was waiting for her daddy one day It was time to meet him, when she heard her mommy say Come to mommy darling, please do not cry Daddy's gone to heaven, way up in the sky How far is heaven? When can I go? To see my daddy, he's there I know. How far is heaven? Let's go tonight. I want my daddy to hold me tight. He was called so suddenly, and could not say goodbye I know that he's in heaven, we'll meet him by and by The little girl trembled, her tears she could not hide she looked up for heaven and then she replied How far is heaven? When can I go? To see my daddy, he's there I know. How far is heaven? Let's go tonight I want my daddy By Kitty Wells We are our infinite

My apologies if this has been posted before - I just got this CD for Christmas...very good & moving, it's got me all sad and wistful... The Story - Brandi Carlile All of these lines across my face Tell you the story of who I am So many stories of where I've been And how I got to where I am But these stories don't mean anything When you've got no one to tell them to It's true...I was made for you I climbed across the mountain tops Swam all across the ocean blue I crossed all the lines and I broke all the rules But baby I broke them all for you Because even when I was flat broke You made me feel like a million bucks You do I was made for you You see the smile that's on my mouth It's hiding the words that don't come out And all of my friends who think that I'm blessed They don't know my head is a mess No, they don't know who I really am And they don't know what I've been through like you do And I was made for you... All of these lines across my face Tell you the story of who I am So many stories of where I've been And how I got to where I am But these stories don't mean anything When you've got no one to tell them to It's true...I was made for you |

This one is deeply touching, IMO - you may have heard it on the soundtrack to Donnie Darko & Shrek: Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen (covered by Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, kd lang, etc) I've heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this The fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you She tied you To a kitchen chair She broke your throne, she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Maybe I've been here before I know this room, I've walked this floor I used to live alone before I knew you I've seen your flag on the marble arch love is not a victory march It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah There was a time you'd let me know What's real and going on below But now you never show it to me do you? Remember when I moved in you? The holy dark was moving too And every breath we drew was hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Maybe there's a God above And all I ever learned from love Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you It's not a cry you can hear at night It's not somebody who's seen the light It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah |

This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You) Recorded by many, but my preference is the original by The Isley Brothers. I dearly love this song...it makes me laugh, it makes me cry... it makes me want to sing along and dance...what can I say? This old heart of mine been broke a thousand times Each time you break away I feel you're gone to stay Lonely nights that come, memories that flow Bringin' ya back again, hurting me more and more Maybe it's my mistake to show this love I feel inside 'cause each day that passes by Ya got me never knowin' if I'm comin' or goin' but I I love you-ou-ou, yes, I do This old heart (ooh) darlin' is weak for you I love you-ou-ou, yes, I do These old arms of mine miss having you around Makes these tears inside start falling down Always with half a kiss you remind me of what I miss Though I try to control myself Like a fool I start grinnin' cause my head starts spinning. I love you-ou-ou, yes, I do This old heart (ooh) darlin' is weak for you I love you-ou-ou, yes, I do Yes I do I try hard to hide my hurt inside This old heart of mine always keep me cryin' The way you're treatin' me leaves me incomplete You're here for the day, gone for the week But if you leave me a hundred times A hundred times I'll take you back I'm yours whenever you want me I'm not too proud to shout it, tell the world about it 'cause I love you-ou-ou This old heart (this old heart) is weak for you I love you-ou-ou This old heart (this old heart) is weak for you I love you-ou-ou This old heart (this old heart) is weak for you |

Ok not a "song" but a poem I've always loved, which inspired a short story by a most famous writer. --- There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground, And swallows circling with their shimmering sound; And frogs in the pool singing at night, And wild plum trees in tremulous white; Robins will wear their feathery fire, Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire; And not one will know of the war, not one Will care at last when it is done. Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree, If mankind perished utterly; And Spring herself when she woke at dawn Would scarcely know that we were gone. "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Sara Teasdale "How can we account for our present situation unless we believe that men high in this Government are concerting to deliver us to disaster?" Joseph McCarthy

That must Have been a good time.. I Missed you in here SW http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v=ubpkJblDjSI&feature=related Sad Songs Music by Elton John Lyrics by Bernie Taupin Guess there are times when we all need to share a little pain And ironing out the rough spots Is the hardest part when memories remain And it's times like these when we all need to hear the radio `Cause from the lips of some old singer We can share the troubles we already know Turn them on, turn them on Turn on those sad songs When all hope is gone Why don't you tune in and turn them on They reach into your room Just feel their gentle touch When all hope is gone Sad songs say so much If someone else is suffering enough to write it down When every single word makes sense Then it's easier to have those songs around The kick inside is in the line that finally gets to you and it feels so good to hurt so bad And suffer just enough to sing the blues Sad songs, they say Sad songs, they say Sad songs, they say Sad songs, they say so much a we n' de yauh ho. eh

TY, buddie. Ah, yes.....sad songs......so often, nothing else will do, huh? ---------- Anybody who is an Eagles fan, and who hasn't done so yet, go and get a copy of Long Road Out Of Eden. It is an absolutely killer album; 2 CDs, tons of music, and not a single bad song on it. Every time I listen to it, I like it more. Here are a couple of selections - the opening song, and the title song: No More Walks In The Wood and Long Road Out Of Eden Moon shining down through the palms Shadows moving on the sand Somebody whispering the twenty-third Psalm Dusty rifle in his trembling hands Somebody trying just to stay alive He got promises to keep Over the ocean in America Far away and fast asleep. Silent stars blinking in the blackness of an endless sky Cold silver satellites, ghostly caravans passing by Galaxies unfolding; new worlds being born Pilgrims and prodigals creeping toward the dawn But it's a long road out of Eden. Music blasting from an SUV On a bright and sunny day Rolling down the interstate In the good ol' USA Having lunch at the petroleum club Smoking fine cigars and swapping lies "Gimme 'nother slice of that barbecued brisket!" "Gimme 'nother piece of that pecan pie" Freeways flickering, cell phones chiming a tune We're riding to Utopia; road map says we'll be arriving soon Captains of the old order clinging to the reins Assuring us these aches inside are only growing pains But it's a long road out of Eden Back home, I was so certain; the path was very clear But now I have to wonder - what are we doing here? I'm not counting on tomorrow and I can't tell wrong from right But I'd give anything to be there in your arms tonight Weaving down the American highway Through the litter and the wreckage, and the cultural junk Bloated with entitlement, loaded on propaganda Now we're driving dazed and drunk Went down the road to Damascus, the road to Mandalay Met the ghost of Caesar on the Appian Way He said, "It's hard to stop this bingeing once you get a taste But the road to empire is a bloody, stupid waste" Behold the bitten apple - the power of the tools But all the knowledge in the world is of no use to fools And it's a long road out of Eden "In the end, only kindness matters."

I'm pining for warm weather....... April come she will When streams are ripe and swelled with rain May, she will stay Resting in my arms again June, she'll change her tune In restless walks she'll prowl the night July, she will fly And give no warning to her flight August, die she must The autumn winds blow chilly and cold September I'll remember A love once new has now grown old (Simon & Garfunkel) "In the end, only kindness matters."

Admit it, you have sung the wrong words to a song for years until you got on the net and read the lyrics. Lucky for you, no one else knew what the heck they were singing in the first place. Crosby Stills and Nash with that hit song "Wooden Chips On the Water" Or this song which is worth a laugh for all of you who thought you gnu but didn't.... http://www.jibjab.com/view/227052 The personal life deeply lived always expands into truths beyond itself. ---Anais Nin

Reminds me of my mom back in the late 70s or early 80s. We were goin down the road in the car and the song "Take it to the Limit" by the Eagles was on the radio and she was singing "Take it to the Linens". I said "mom, what do you think that song means?" and she said "it all comes out in the wash?" I said "no mom" and we just kept on down the road with her singing it. |

I get a kick out of "mis-heard lyrics", too. One of my anal-retentive (according to some who know me) tendencies is to have ALWAYS been obsessed with lyrics. This dates back to age 5, when I heard an instrumental version of "Unchained Melody", and was sobbing over it.....so my parents taught me the lyrics. I always wondered why people didn't just read the lyrics on the albums.... but then, I realize that the average person (?) doesn't really care that much! I am so glad that there are those who do care about the lyrics! That's why I love this thread.....the words are IMPORTANT.
Buddie, I have the movie on video, as well. I still love it!!! "In the end, only kindness matters."

I have always been a Sting fan, and thanks to this thread, I have become a Chris Botti fan! Thank you! It soothed my psyche as well, and allowed me to take a breather. However, I still feel like letting my freak-flag fly! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zdB1zyjI48 (I will now proceed to entangle the entire area!) Almost cut my hair It happened just the other day It's gettin' kinda long I could've said it was in my way But I didn't and I wonder why I feel like letting my freak flag fly Guess I feel like I owe it to someone. Must be because I had the flu for Christmas And I'm not feeling up to par It increases my paranoia Like looking in my mirror and seeing a police car But I'm not, I'm not giving in an inch to fear Cause I've promised myself this year I feel like I owe it to someone When I finally get myself together I'm gonna get down in that sunny southern weather And I'll find a place and settle there And separate the wheat from some chaff I feel like I owe it to someone, yeah. Um hmm. "In the end, only kindness matters."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELvfMJoKDAk I don't need to be anything other than a prison guard's son I don't need to be anything other than a specialist's son I don't have to be anyone other than a birth of two souls in one Part of where I'm going, is knowing where I'm coming from I don't want to be anything other than what I've been trying to be lately All I have to do is think of me and I have peace of mind I'm tired of looking 'round rooms wondering what I've got to do Or who I'm supposed to be I don't want to be anything other than me I'm surrounded by liars everywhere I turn I'm surrounded by imposters everywhere I turn I'm surrounded by an identity crisis everywhere I turn Am I the only one who noticed? I can't be the only one who's learned I don't want to be anything other than what I've been trying to be lately All I have to do is think about me and I have peace of mind I'm tired of looking 'round rooms wondering what I've got to do Or who I'm supposed to be I don't want to be anything other than me Can I have everyone's attention please? If you're not like this and that, you're gonna have to leave? I came from the mountain, the crust of creation My whole situation - made from clay to stone And now I'm telling everybody I don't want to be anything other than what I've been trying to be lately All I have to do is think of me and I have peace of mind I'm tired of looking 'round rooms wondering what I'm trying to do Or who I'm supposed to be I don't want to be anything other than me I don't want to be "In the end, only kindness matters."
