We are planning to replace the current board with new software in the near future. We do not yet have a schedule. Due to a number of issues and risks with migrating the old board data to new software, we are planning to freeze this board and keep it available, in its entirety, as an archive for as long as we are able.

In the meantime, please continue to enjoy the current board, flaws-and-all - it is a wonderful community.

:-)

If it uses Discus (which is likely because of the discus.cgi), they have a successful upgrade guarantee if you use their service to migrate it to the new version.

http://www.discusware.com/services/upgrade.html

If you backup first there's no harm in trying, because you can always restore it if needed.

Of course there's other good forum software too, such as vBulletin. The forum is probably due for an upgrade one way or the other, so I'm glad that it's in the works.

PHPBB2 or 3 is a very good system for forums, you really should think that one over. I used to be an admin on PHPBB2, really awesome to configure the whole forum. There's so many options, there's a chance to RP. You can have professions, a bank, title, colored names, customise your emoticons, rank images, icon images, the list goes on and on.

This board is at least 15 years old, so it's time for a change. I used to be kind of active on it 10 years ago. I understand that importing the data wouldn't be easy. I hope the board is something along the lines of vBulletin. It has a lot of awesome features. Anyway, I may get involved again after a lengthy hiatus :-) Look forward to the new board.

IMO, importing the data would most likely not be possible. Most message boards use their own proprietary formats.

What many sites do is keep the old forum as an archive.

not to everyone.

there are people and companies who specialize in this. they have ready made scripts that converts your data automatically, in seconds. (though i'm not sure they'll tell you how little it costs them).

Interesting. I wonder if that is mostly true with forums which are based on Perl? Don't know the language used to build this system.

it wouldn't have mattered if the forum software was in perl or some other language, it's just the data we are after.

many of the early ones, including discusware (this) were written in perl. perl is still ok, but discusware appears to be dead. i sometimes write scripts to solve similar problems. it's one of the most common programming tasks.

In any case, the discussion has been going on for a long time on the forum. Personally, I doubt that we will leaving this software.

I was under the impression that the database format the forum was using couldn't be accessed for some reason. It wouldn't be difficult to make a version of this message board in new software. PHP with MySQL has been a common method. I meant the message board only, not the payment accepting details necessarily without getting more information from the managers of the site.

Despite the simplicity of this forum software, I have seen much worse. The more complexity is added to a forum, the more updates are required.
