Wonderful news. My daughter Bonnie is closing on her house tomorrow!
Not much to move over there cause all her furniture was burned in the condo
fire. But this is a new beginning and I'm so happy for her.

TODAY is the New Moon...the 2nd new moon in January. This is a special time for a new beginning.

So this is good for new beginnings for us all.

Love to all and it helps to think on the bright side.

I came across this painting a couple hours
ago and I am stunned by the emotion. I have
a love of swans and usually think of them in
a peaceful and serene mode. I should know that
they are capable of this as I see the ducks and geese in my canal get angry as hell sometimes but
I don't have a swan. For some reason I wish I'd
never seen this painting but another part of me
likes it and makes me love her.

Jan Asselijn (Dutch, Dutch Golden Age, c. 1600/1616–1652): The Threatened Swan

http://www.flickr.com/photos/eoskins/5162620211/

more~~~pondering:

"With its wings stretched and its neck poised, the swan protects her eggs against a dog swimming nearby. Showing the scene from a low angle emphasises the bird’s power."

Was in my bedroom this afternoon because my fingers didn't like the computer keyboard or
the piano keyboard. They wanted to be idle so I
let my mind idle as well. I have a red tip shrub
outside my window next to the magnolia that has
grown so large. I need to have it trimmed. Anyway...I'm day dreaming and
looking up at it when I start to sing I Only Have Eyes For You. All of a sudden a beautiful Cardinal
bird lands up on top of the red tip and it has gotten real high. I haven't seen a Cardinal in years. It was looking at me and I was embarrassed because I don't sing that good but I kept on. Soon as I finished it flew away. Silly that I
felt I was dreaming but I wasn't. This doesn't mean anything but it seemed surreal.

Speaking of birdies...the robins have arrived, hoards of them hopping around the meadow outside the house. And the jonquils have broken ground. The light at the end of the tunnel, the promises of the Spring to come given in the dead of Winter.

Meanwhile another snow is on the way set to arrive tomorrow. (Sigh.)

Speaking of Ocmulgee, we have the Etowah Indian Mounds not too far from here. Then there's Fort Mountain State Park. Fort Mountain is a bit of a mystery. On top of the mountain is what appears to be a fortress, built by a pre-Cherokee tribe.

The Cherokee gave the first whites in the area the following account:

When the Cherokee first entered north Georgia there was a tribe that took refuge on one end of the mountain top. At that location three sides were sheer cliffs so they built a large rock wall from one side to the other creating a defense.

The Cherokee called them "The Moon-Eyed People" because they said that they only came out at night. The Cherokee attacked the fortress again and again before at last they breached it.

Today there are several theories about the wall and who created it, including:

It was not a defensive fortress but built as an astrological tool.

The Moon-Eyed People were stranded aliens who took refuge there. Or they were Welsh who arrived before Columbus.

I think that there must be something to the Cherokee version of events because it took place not all that long before it was told to the newly arrived whites. I don't think the story handed down by word of mouth could have been completely corrupted.

Conquest of territory.

The Cherokee were originally in the northeast part of the US. They were driven out of their homeland by a stronger tribe and fled southward around 1300 AD. To establish their own territory they had to fight and displace many other tribes. This constant struggle for territory was common for just about all tribes in North America going back many thousands of years. The Navajo for example, were originally from Canada. Inter-tribal warfare went on right into the late 1800s.

These days it exists only in the form of jokes told with other tribes being the brunt of the mocking.

The constant struggle for territory seems to be an overall constant for man....and beast, actually.....

Something or someone always seems to want what the other has...and will kill to get it.

Life is a harsh thing. Sometimes I wish not to exist. I don't mean I want to kill myself or anything like that....I just mean....when this life is over....let it be over for ever....I don't feel like that often, but sometimes I do, actually.

Bean- "The constant struggle for territory seems to be an overall constant for man....and beast, actually."

Yes.

"Something or someone always seems to want what the other has."

In the case of critters and Indians it was due to increasing populations. As a tribe's numbers increased they required additional hunting grounds for food. This brought them into conflict with the tribe on their mutual border as they crossed that line to hunt.

It's the same with critters. Meerkats for example, live in family groups and have established territories with definite borders separating them from other groups. As one group's numbers increase, they begin to cross into another group's territory to hunt food. The two groups meet and a fight ensues with the stronger group either driving back the invader or retreating.

It also happens between two different species that use the same food source- as one expands into new territory resulting in a reduction of the population of another species or even the extinction of that species.

It is my understanding that tribes generally shared hunting grounds. They had agreements with each other regarding these shared lands between tribal homelands. These lands were often the first lands that Europeans/Americans claimed saying that they were unoccupied. These lands were also where many medicines were gathered, and some fair weather farming occurred.

However, scarcity breeds territoriality. With the few staking claims on everything they can get their hands on -- leaving "not enough" for the rest of us -- its not surprising people get kinda crazy over what's left. imo, this "trickles down" to the animal and plant kingdom -- because if resources are scarce for us -- one can only imagine how tough it must be to be a wild creature being driven out of home after home generation after generation.

This poem came to me just now. I must
have tucked it away in my mind. I'll pass it
on for what it's worth.

Abou Ben Adhem

By James Henry Leigh Hunt (19 October 1784 – 28 August 1859 / Southgate, London

Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)

Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,

And saw, within the moonlight in his room,

Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,

An angel writing in a book of gold:—

Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,

And to the presence in the room he said,

"What writest thou?"—The vision raised its head,

And with a look made of all sweet accord,

Answered, "The names of those who love the Lord."

"And is mine one?" said Abou. "Nay, not so,"

Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low,

But cheerly still; and said, "I pray thee, then,

Write me as one that loves his fellow men."

The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night

It came again with a great wakening light,

And showed the names whom love of God had blest,

And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest.

Blue- "It is my understanding that tribes generally shared hunting grounds."

Some did, most did not. For example, the Northern Cheyenne and Lakota were allies and shared the northern plains but several other tribes including the Blackfeet & Pawnee were their enemies. A tribe's very survival depended on having adequate hunting grounds.

I mentioned this on facebook the other
day but since I talk about my Stanley Goose
so much here I'll tell this.

The other night I heard Stanley honking his
head off in the canal and he rarely honks
at night. It was panic honking and I got
scared as I live alone now.So I walked to the back to see what was up and my back door was
unlocked and about to swing open because a
cold wind was blowing. Perhaps Bonnie had gone
on the veranda while moving some stuff from
here to her new house and didn't secure it
properly. Soon as I locked it Stanley swam away
quietly. How in heck did he know the door was
not locked? Even though this is no big deal it
made me thank the Angels that look after us in
mysterious ways.

Ah Mama, you know I love that one! How are you? Ever talk to Whitley? How is Anne? Haven't been around for awhile. Mom passed away on the anniversary of my brothers death, Feb. 7th. Alot of stuff happening in my life. I come by when I can.

Yes, I thought of you when I posted

Dear Moonbeam,

I have MISSED you, and thought about you so often. You are in my prayers again, and I am sending out prayers for your comfort. I understand!

----------

Mama, I also love that song so much.

Also love this one........

I am so grateful that this long COLD and stressful winter is coming to an end.

May we all experience warmth and comfort and joy and peace of the coming Spring!

And, as beautiful as the original version of this song was and still is, the version from "Love" is just stunning and even more genius!

Happy Spring!!!!

I tried to post this in the 'Nature and Conservation' forum and none of the topics would take new threads...don't know why.

JUMP FOR JOY!

This morning the judges of the International Court of Justice handed down a long-anticipated decision on whether Japan’s government-subsidised whaling program in the Southern Ocean should be allowed to continue.

While today’s ruling did not outlaw the killing of whales for scientific research per se, it categorically confirmed that Japan’s whaling program does not have scientific purposes, and the number of whales being killed was not justifiable in the name of science. The court went on to say that Japan must stop issuing permits for this whaling.

"A dream can bring us back to ourselves. Dreaming can open a path for soul to return to us, so we can be whole and fully know love and joy and hope, and live the life we dreamed before the part of us that is the beautiful dreamer took flight and didn't come back. Through dreaming, we learn to sing the soul back home."
